16th Annual Luncheon with the Mayors
|
|
Each year for the past 15 years, we have had the pleasure of hosting our popular Luncheon with the Mayors event in May to celebrate Community Living Month in Ontario.
Our annual luncheon is a great opportunity for us to reach out to community leaders in municipalities and organizations across Essex County. With continued COVID-19 health risks present, we again presented our event virtually on May 18th.
A total of sixty participants, including representatives from each municipality in Essex County and community leaders from a variety of local organizations and business attended the virtual event.
Participants enjoyed an information-filled agenda that included introductions and updates on Community Living Essex County programs and services. The virtual luncheon was capped off by the Backyard Makeover Early Bird raffle draw.

Shane Donates to the Amherstburg Mission
|
|
You may remember our article from last summer, featuring Shane. Last year, he started refurbishing old bicycles that have been left to the side of the road for garbage, as well as bikes that people donated to him. He donated many bikes to people receiving supports from Community Living Essex County.
Recently, Shane decided to donate the remainder of the bikes to the Amherstburg Mission! A huge thanks to Shane for his kindness.
This summer Shane's plans are working in his garden and building flower and vegetable planters.

Where do the days and months go? Two months ago we were longing for the end of winter and then it seemed as if we were skipping spring as our temperatures soared. Today with persistent rain and seasonal temperatures we can be assured that spring is here.
The May long weekend will give everyone a chance to enjoy some outdoor activities. Happy long weekend!
As the clock ticks and the constant demands of family life may sometimes leave you with an overwhelming feeling of, “There aren’t enough hours in the day! This task will never be complete!”; step back and know that you are not alone. Life is complicated and demanding. No one knows this better than families with special needs children and adults.
Time for an attitude shift. If these families with carefree existences feel overwhelmed - give yourself a pat on the back because you are capable of achieving more in a day than they’ll achieve in a lifetime. Celebrate your capabilities!
Happy Spring!

Materials Needed:
- several tin cans
- hammer
- nails of different sizes (to make holes of different sizes)
- a towel to stabilize the can during hammering
- a marker to plan your design
- wire hanger for the handle
- wire-cutter pliers
- cordless drill (optional)
- tea-light candles
First, draw your design on paper. Then draw your design in dots on the can with a marker.
Tip: Cans that are a little thinner in width might bend a little when you're hammering in the nails in the next step. They'll still look and work fine in the dark but to avoid this, fill cans nearly full with water and freeze them overnight before you hammer them in the next step.
|
|
Next, find the most comfortable way to hammer nails into the can, poking holes where you’ve made marker dots. You can use a cordless drill to speed this step up, but it is not necessary. Remember, the more holes you poke, the more dramatic the lanterns will be.
|
|
After you have poked enough holes, it is time to attach your handles. Clip your hangers and bend them into long loops. Hook the ends through holes in the cans and crimp them into hooks with your pliers. Be sure to make the handles long enough that the heat from the candles doesn't burn your hands.
Once it's dark, add tea-light candles (that won't tip over), light and enjoy.
