Celebrating Canadian Down Syndrome Week

This week, we join the Canadian Down Syndrome Society in celebrating the incredible contributions, talents, and voices of people with Down syndrome.

This year’s theme “We Deserve Care” reminds us that everyone deserves access to quality healthcare throughout their lives. As more adults and seniors with Down syndrome thrive into their 40s, 50s, and beyond, it’s time to ensure healthcare systems evolve alongside them.

Let’s celebrate inclusion, progress, and the people who inspire us every day to build communities where everyone belongs. 💙💛

Homeruns and Hangouts

Late last month, Kevin K. and Kevin H. traveled to Toronto to attend a Blue Jays game. Kevin K. met up with family at the game, and they spent the evening together enjoying the city and each other’s company. The men enjoyed staying in Toronto overnight, taking the opportunity to relax and make the most of their trip, and everyone had a wonderful time.

Goal Getters: Noah Tackles Toronto

Last week, Noah accomplished one of his goals by taking an overnight trip to Toronto. He had an incredible time exploring the city, starting with a thrilling visit to Canada’s Wonderland for Halloween Haunt, where he enjoyed the rides and braved the haunted houses. The next day, he stepped out onto the glass floor at the CN Tower and visited the Ripley’s Aquarium, where the stingrays and sharks were his favourites. It was an unforgettable experience for Noah and a big milestone toward reaching his personal travel goals. He is already looking forward to another adventure at Canada’s Wonderland.

Shining a Light on Inclusive Employment

Last week, the team at the Community Living Essex County main office joined together in wearing purple to show our support for inclusive workplaces and to celebrate the valuable contributions of people with disabilities in our communities.

The Career Compass team celebrated National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) with dinner at Jose's Bar and Grill in Leamington, to recognize Donny as an inclusive employer. The team also took pictures around the county for #LightItUpForNDEAM, shining a light on the importance of inclusive employment and accessibility in our community.

CLEAR THINKING

The daily demands of parenting a child or young adult with intellectual disabilities can often feel overwhelming. When faced with challenges, we may resort to negative thoughts. Do negative thoughts lead to clear thinking?

I think you know the answer!

An environment filled with positive energy brings many rewards.

In the words of a guru:

"If people could only feel how harmful negativity is, they would never have a negative thought!"

We all have negative thoughts from time to time—that’s normal! But when the only thoughts we have are negative, it’s time to make some changes.

Too often, we turn to others for answers. Before doing this, we need to clean up our own negative thinking. Solutions start with us!

Within our community, there are opportunities to surround ourselves with positive energy. AutismOntario.com – West Windsor – ADULTS – has some suggestions:

  1. West Leamington Family Open Gym
  2. West Windsor Adult Social Club – Trivia
  3. Rad Dads
  4. West Windsor Caregiver Coffee & Chat

*These offerings are for all of Essex County.

Opportunities for adults and caregivers are updated regularly. Why not share these with your trusted support helpers? They need to be surrounded by positive energy too!

Now that you’re surrounding yourself with positive energy, make forward progress by exploring avenues that provide you and your family with days of possibilities, discovered through clear, positive thinking!

Until next week,

Marilyn

DIY Succulent Pumpkin Decor

Halloween doesn’t have to be spooky—it can be crafty and creative! Try this pumpkin décor as a centerpiece, porch decoration, or mantle accent. You’ll need a pumpkin, a succulent or foliage, a repotting container, pebbles for drainage, and potting soil. Start by measuring and cutting a hole in the pumpkin to fit your container, then clean out the pumpkin guts and seeds. Add pebbles to the bottom to keep the container stable, place the container inside the pumpkin, and fill it with more pebbles and potting soil. Finally, arrange your succulent or foliage as desired and water your new seasonal friend.
