Keeping Well During Cold and Flu Season
We're all beginning to hear more about cold and flu season approaching. This year in particular it's important that we all take extra care to keep strong and stay healthy. Eating well, getting plenty of rest, taking vitamins, practicing hand hygiene, managing stress, drinking plenty of fluids, and exercising regularly can help your body maintain a powerful defense to prevent and fight off sickness.

At Community Living Essex County, just this week we've begun our annual messaging campaign to encourage people we support and employees to get their flu shot. Dr. Wajid Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health of the WECHU, is urging everyone to be vaccinated, “It is important to protect yourself from COVID-19 by following public health measures. However, it is also important to protect yourself from influenza by getting the flu vaccine.” Starting this week, the flu vaccine will be widely available from participating pharmacies, health care providers, and walk-in clinics.

This winter, as the temperature drops, we can all expect to deal with at least one bout of the common cold. Although some medical professionals anticipate a lower than normal number of cases of the common cold this winter due to enhanced hygiene practices and preventative measures related to COVID-19 such as mask wearing and physical distancing, you may very well find yourself dealing with a stuffy nose, sneezing or annoying cough. The following chart can help you to distinguish symptoms of the common cold and flu from COVID-19. Stay healthy everyone.
