Falls, Luck, and Rock n' Roll
Gerald recently went on a vacation to Niagara Falls! While he was there, he attended a live-action Elvis tribute show called "Return to Grace." After the show, he spent some time trying his luck on the slot machines at the casino. The rest of his time was spent relaxing and sightseeing. What an incredible getaway!

It’s summertime! Are you heading to the beach? Do you enjoy building sandcastles even though you are an adult? Of course, you do! There’s something magical about the feeling of sand in your hands. Sensory activities improve how we feel. For those with intellectual disabilities, the positive benefits of activities that target the feeling of touch cannot be stressed enough.
Some of the possible benefits include:
- improved coordination
- increased expression
- learning: colours, scents, textures
- relationship building
- greater independence
- stress reduction
You don’t have to travel to the beach to benefit from activities that stress TOUCH. Go no further than your kitchen! Playdough can be created easily and inexpensively in your home kitchen. This activity will provide countless hours of pleasure for those young and old.
Ingredients
1 cup flour
½ cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup water
1 tbsp. vegetable oil
Food colouring
Mix all ingredients together. Microwave for 3-4 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Let cool, kneed before using. Once you’ve made your playdough, place a plastic cloth or protective placemat over your workspace. From there, get a variety of useful tools such as a rolling pin, dull knife (not plastic), fork, cookie cutters, etc. Model rolling playdough using your hands and/or a rolling pin. Form small rolls that you can cut into disks. Make patterns with forks etc. The possibilities are endless!
For greater challenges, form objects, faces, animals, flowers and more. Children’s books have been illustrated with clay models. Motivate budding artists with these illustrations — all done with modelling clay/dough.
Age is not a barrier to enjoying creative, relaxing, pleasurable artistic pass times. GET ROLLING!
