Homework from Last Week's Lesson: A Prayer Walk

“Lord Jesus, help me see your kingdom.”

Walk through somewhere familiar — your grocery store, school, or neighborhood — praying that line.

• Try not to analyze; just notice. Where do you see beauty? Suffering? Unexpected acts of love or mercy?
• Ask: who might Jesus be inviting me to notice more carefully?
• At the end, write down one thing you saw and offer a prayer of thanksgiving or intercession.

COZY COMFORT FOOD MONTH: Help St. James Food Bank this September!

Dear Friends,

As the September weather cools down and school routines start up, busy families need quick, warm, and filling dinners. That is why the St. James Food Bank Item of the Month is the perfect duo: Rice and Chili!

When paired together, rice and chili create a hearty, complete, and nutritious meal that stretches further to feed a whole family.

How You Can Help This Month

The next time you grocery shop, please consider picking up:

• Canned chili: Meat, vegetarian, or turkey chili.
• Bags of rice: White, brown, or instant varieties.

Our Donation Goal: We had a 34% increase in clients last distribution Sunday! YAY! We are setting a goal of 300 cans of chili and 300 packages of rice this month! You can drop off your donations at the St. James Parish Office during our regular hours or on Sunday at our collection basket in the Narthex.

MUSIC CATALOGING PROJECT COMPLETE!

It is storied through and through in our church that there are church mice. You know....the people that do things that nary a soul would ever know about. We all know one, or have been one.

For months our Music Director, Seth, has been working on a project to get all of our sheet music in order at St. James. What started as giant unorganized file drawers and shelves of years and years of music for our church has turned into the tidiest drawers and shelves in the building! In addition to them physically organized and filed, he eliminated much duplication AND created a master catalogue spreadsheet by title, composer and liturgical season.

Our choir starts back up on September 9th....and Seth is as ready as ever. He is recruiting singers to join our choir. All experience levels are welcome. You can email him with questions or to thank him for keeping us organized.

THE ST. JAMES ANNUAL CAR SHOW NEEDS YOU!

Hello, St. James friends!

Our Annual Car Show is rapidly approaching! The event on September 19th directly benefits our Building and Grounds Fund allowing us to be the best stewards we can be for our church home and to further our outreach mission in the community. Our building is a safe space for multiple recovery groups like AA and NA, we support those facing food scarcity with our Food Bank, we offer a worship space another church congregation and, of course, for our community to gather together in worship.

My husband, Joe, and I handle most of the behind-the-scenes pre-show labor, but we desperately need assistance the day of the event. 

Many hands make light work. Please use the button below to see where we have gaps and volunteer where you are able. You can signup using the Breeze signup sheet sent recently, email me using the link below or call the Parish Office.

You can also support the show by making a donation directly to the Car Show using Breeze or Venmo (stjamesutah).

If you have raffle items they need to be at St. James no later than September 13th.

COMMUNITY AND CANES!!! SEPTEMBER 21, 2026

Save the date! On September 21, 2026, 3pm to 8pm, we are partnering with Raising Cane's in Midvale to to do a community fundraiser for the St. James Charity Car Show.

When you go for dinner it is VERY IMPORTANT that you mention "St. James" at the register when you order.

Raising Canes will donate 15% of their Net Proceeds from 3:00pm to 8:00pm to St. James.

Put "Dinner at Raising Cane's" on your calendar and we'll see you there!

PARISH CAMPING TRIP IS A WRAP - MOON LAKE 2026

Our campers are home after quite the whirlwind of weather last weekend. Between the rain showers the group managed a few campfires and James Shoop managed to catch some fish. Sunday morning Worship was held in Sandy & Preston Motes' 5th wheel during a pea-sized hail storm.

Moon Lake is a special place even with the wettest of weather. As you can see in the images below, it's a ridiculously scenic high-mountain reservoir nestled on the southern slope of the High Uinta Mountains in Duchesne County, Utah. Sitting at an elevation of roughly 8,100 feet inside the Ashley National Forest, it serves as both a major irrigation storehouse and a popular destination for outdoor recreation.  

Long before modern settlement, the area was used by the Ute people for seasonal hunting and fishing. In the 1930s, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation built the earthen Moon Lake Dam across the Lake Fork River, expanding the natural lake into a larger reservoir capacity.  

Moon Lake is actively stocked and is a prime spot for catching Rainbow trout, Tiger trout, Brook trout, Splake, and Kokanee salmon. Aside from when the occassional mountain winds kick up, it's a blast for stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.

The lake has a bit of local myth attached to it. Area legends include tales of a phantom "Moon Lake Monster," lost Spanish gold cannons at the bottom, and a local ghost story involving a young girl lost in the woods.

Find a camper from the trip this Sunday and ask them about the Moon Lake Monster and what their favorite ice cream flavor is from the resort across the campground.

SAVE THE DATE!

Three St. James Endowment Committee informational sessions, following the 10 o‘clock service on September 20, September 27 and October 11, will introduce ways to live as you wish and express your love for your family. 

The October 11 presentation will be about important topics we’d rather not think about: hospice care and advance funeral/celebration of life planning. To lighten a dreary subject, the Endowment Committee will ask participants to submit their favorite celebration of life or funeral foods.
