Welcome to Holy Week! If you attend this week’s services, you will be led on a journey from the garden to the cross to the grave to the resurrection, and music will play a large part in your experience. Here is a snapshot:
Holy Week Music at Trinity
Maundy Thursday: The Trinity Choir will lead us in musical worship and offer the touching anthem “When You Prayed Beneath the Trees", Carolyn Fagerholm will present the beloved “Agnus Dei” (Lamb of God) from J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, and Claire Dresselhuis, cellist, will set the tone with cello solos that will truly move you. The musical prelude starts 15 minutes prior to the service, so come early and enter a space of prayer as you listen.
Good Friday: Members of the Connecticut Choral Society will again join the Trinity Choir in the loft, singing the Introit from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and the Cantique de Jean Racine also by Fauré.
Easter Vigil: Once we’ve come in from our outdoor start, Carolyn Fagerholm will present the Easter Proclamation, known as The Exsultet, the musically challenging chant that causes many a cantor to lose sleep. Carolyn joyfully offers to sing The Exsultet each year, and we are blessed! The choir will usher in the resurrection with the spritely anthem “This Joyful Eastertide”, and our soprano section leader Cristina DiMuro Trnik is joined by her husband Michael Trnik in the beautiful duet by Mendelssohn, “I Waited for the Lord”.
Easter Morning (with musical prelude 15 min prior to the service): Buckle your seatbelts and brush off your Hallelujah Chorus! Joy will be in the house on Easter morning, and the loft will be filled to capacity with the Trinity Choir, augmented with extra singers sponsored by Orchestra Nexus as they lead hymns and sing the favorite Eater anthem “With a Voice of Singing”. We will have brass players with us, and there promises to be an element of surprise or two! Warm up your voices, because we will end the service with a singalong of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah! Each of these Holy Week services will be accompanied by Eric Knapp on the organ, and he will conclude our Easter service with none other than the famous Toccata by Charles Marie Widor.
Come and experience all that Trinity has to offer you this week. I am looking forward to this spiritual and musical journey with you.
God bless you this Easter,
Jennifer

April 14, 2024 - 3 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, CT
A TOWERING MASTERPIECE COMES TO CONNECTICUT
The Connecticut Choral Society is proud to announce a special presentation of “one of
the greatest works of sacred music ever written” – the MONTEVERDI VESPERS 1610
The concert Is on April 14, 2024 at 3 pm at Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, CT.
The Connecticut Choral Society will perform together with the internationally acclaimed
ORCHESTRANEXUS, Nexus Choral Artists, and renowned soloists Linda Sweetman-
Waters, organ, and Max Vladimiroff, harpsichord under the direction of Maestro Eric
Dale Knapp.
The MONTEVERDI VESPERS 1610, a masterwork of the early Baroque period, is an
extraordinary and revolutionary setting of the five psalms, hymn, and Magnificat which
make up the Vespers liturgy. It is a grand scale production with multiple choirs, soloists,
harpsichord, organ and orchestra that features majestic choruses, poignant duets, and
virtuosic solos of breathtaking beauty.
The audience can expect a grand scale treat as well. Listeners will be seated in the
center of a performance in the round, surrounded by soloists, orchestra and various
vocal ensembles, as if in a sacred embrace. At times they may hear the call of angels
from high above.
This glorious masterpiece is seldom performed in its entirety due to the scope of the
production.
This Connecticut presentation is a rare opportunity for local audiences to experience a
live performance of the unforgettable masterpiece that has captivated performers and
audiences for over four centuries.
Tickets are $55.00 and are available online or at the door, if not sold out prior to the
