United Way Wednesday
This Week's Featured UWCCMC Funded Agency:
College for Kids and Teens is a summer outreach program that offers individual classes and day camps that range from growing plants and painting, to sports science and pre-med for students in grades K-12 . Students have a selection of courses, including STEAM and STEMM. Each class provides a great opportunity for students to explore new areas of interest, stretch their imagination or cultivate a skill – all on campus at Clark State! Activities are conducted in a non-graded environment where personal growth and development are encouraged.

All of the College for Kids and Teens' instructors are accredited educators who have been in the teaching profession for multiple years. Making Summer Count: How Summer Programs Can Boost Children's Learning by Jennifer Sloan McCombs guides strategies used for this program. According to McCombs' book, "Summer learning programs have the potential to help children and youth improve their academic and other outcomes. This is especially true for children low-income families who have not had access to educational resources throughout the summer months and for low-achieving students who need additional time to master academic content." Clark State aims to be an affordable option for local families to register their children for classes or day camps that help students maintain math and reading skill over the summer, while being exposed to a college environment.

Clark State Community College is located in the heart of a county heavily affected by low income and food security. Through voluntary parental disclosure on the scholarship form, Clark State collected that 70% of the scholarship recipients are below 150-175% of the federal poverty line. College for Kids and Teens aims to provide affordable educational enrichment enabling students to play and discover new interests while maintaining reading and math skills. By supporting students and exposing them to a college environment early, College for Kids and Teens hopes to get kids interested in college and break the cycle of poverty.

Funding requested from the United Way of Clark, Champaign & Madison Counties goes towards scholarships to give students with financial need the opportunity to participate in the program. United Way is proud to fund an agency that is making such an impact in the community of Clark County. Success Story
“A scholarship award would allow John to attend the Dance, Stories and Art program. He has shown a significant interest in dancing, music, and plays/performances. As evidenced by our family's participation in both WIC and Medicaid, paying for a program like this would be difficult. In addition, John was recently diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Level 1. He is a high functioning individual, and when given the diagnosis we were told to have John involved in as many groups, activities, and programs as possible. By receiving this scholarship, John would be able to participate in an activity with peers who have the same interests, aiding him in peer interactions and life skills. The impact of a scholarship award would be significant to John and participation in the Dance, Stories, and Art program would be something he would remember forever.”*
