HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!
Oh my goodness FLASHERS.... It's good to be home! That being said... What an incredible time was had these past few weeks as I spent invaluable time with daughter Lilly! My trip culminated with the sweetness of being with both my girls when we scooped Allie up in Atlanta and headed for the Andy Grammer concert in Durham, NC. Moments for us to be together are too few, so time together was ... well, it just feels right and the air is filled with
laughter and that family 'love' feeling where you are
with those that know you best! :) I missed having son William with us...But he just couldn't get away. I just love the upbeat and encouraging messages that can be found in all of Andy Grammer's music. I wish the audience could have been filled with FLASHERS! Here is a
quick little video to make you feel like you were there. Andy Grammer lost his mother to breast cancer 10 years ago and wrote a song to his daughter this year Titled...
She'd Say. Another great message can be found in these lyrics.
Speaking of breast cancer, this weekend we kick off Making Strides Against Breast
Cancer here in Indian River County. The Real Men Wear Pink campaign is kicking off too and son William is jumping on board and has pledged to raise $2,500. I would personally be most grateful if any of you would like to contribute to this goal.
You can donate by clicking here. We often here that ANY amount is appreciated ... That is SOOO TRUE, FLASHERS! If every FLASHER gave $1 we would blow his goal out of the water! :) It all ads up! Join us
for the Kick-Off Walk this Saturday at Riverside Park from 7am - 10:30am. There is no charge to join the walk and you will be inspired by the energy produced by those participating which always includes so many survivors!!! YAY! It is an incredible day!
If you are up near Sebastian you can support the Breast Cancer Walk by stopping by the hospital to purchase a pink yard flamingo! They will be for sale throughout the month of October!
All sorts of fun things are ramping up in our own backyard! Concerts, art shows, fall festivals, centennial finale, fund raisers. Check out the Duck Derby and the We Golf For Habitat. Sign up and join us at Big Shots! Hope to see you out and about enjoying all that our town has to offer!! Go 'getcha' some fun, FLASHERS!

THE MOVIE THEATER BUSINESS...
AND WHEN I MET JOHN WAYNE
The movie theater business has changed a great deal since I was a kid. I believe I have told you that my family opened our first theater in 1941 and as I told you before, my Dad built our theaters and my Mom operated them.. Being new to the business, Mom had problems renting movies. Now the actors pretty much control the movies, but in 1941 the Hollywood movie companies like MGM,
Paramount, 20th Century Fox and other companies controlled both the actors and what theaters received their product. The actors were under contract
to a particular company and we're not allowed
to work for another company unless they were 'loaned out'. On the theater end, they contracted with particular theater companies in each city and would not rent their product to other theaters. Consequently, Mom could not show the 'new' movies. My mother was one smart cookie though and she came up with a very successful way to solve this problem. She would select older films and book them as a double feature. She would rent a movie that a man would like and a second feature that today would now be called a 'chick flick' or a lighter comedy. If it was a western or detective film she would pair it with a musical or a comedy. The moviegoer would receive two films for the price of one. This was during World War II and our downtown theater was near the housing for soldiers and sailors, and they loved this less expensive format. Every week there would be different films, and the boys came to the theater so frequently that my parents got to know some of them personally. In fact they actually called my folks 'Mom and Pop'.

These little tea light holders are made from actual apples, so they're gorgeous and they smell wonderful. Use green and red candles for a really diverse look. You literally just cut a hoe in the apple and

insert your tea light candle. Just make sure you don't leave these little beauties burning unattended. As seen on

RELATIONSHIP QUIZ
HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR PARTNER?
Research over the years has shown that one of the most important components of a successful relationship is the quality of friendship between partners. And that requires knowing your partner's likes, dislikes, needs, desires, beliefs, fears, and life dreams. If you don't have a partner at this time, you may want to pass this on to a young couple who might want to use it.

ALOT VS. A LOT
This is an easy one because there is actually no such word as
a
lot
,
however it is a very common mistake that people make. No one seems to know the origin of the mistake, but it should always be spelled as two words. The meaning of a lot depends on the context. Usually, it means "many" or "to a great extent."

` Valerie, I sent out a FB Message to many of our Vero Palm Estates residents, advising them I was going to donate needed supplies for the Bahamas Relief Fund the following day at the Walking Tree Brewery, who were accepting items on their dock. WT planned on shipping everything that weekend. Our residents came through with water, soda, sanitary supplies, canned veggies & other needed items. (I stressed "no clothes".) One neighbor knew I was going to the UP store to purchase boxed cartons of cereals & other items & gave me $5. Several others went shopping & delivered their donations directly to the brewery. Other neighbors anonymously left items by my car & side door. I happily delivered everything I received, & made up a sign to thank the residents & also advise the Bahamians that Florida was helping. After taking several photos of the dock volunteer, I asked if he would take a photo of me, even tho he had already warehoused some of the donations.
