Hello FLASHERS~
Well September certainly came in with a bang!  Let me assure all of our readers that Mom is doing just fine and will be back next week with her column, "My View From Over The Hill"!  ( I can't seem to find the article she sent me for this issue and she 'turned in' hours ago as I stay awake to finish up. I had so many of you check in this past week upon reading that the FLASH family had received some devastating news last week.

My ex-brother-in-law we thought had died from falling on the stairs. An autopsy has since declared Gary's death a 'cardiac incident'. Years ago sister Suzy married my husband's best friend and fraternity brother. Together they had an amazing daughter, Amanda; my niece who is a senior at University of Florida and who makes our entire family so proud! I can still remember standing in my kitchen in Miami cooking and having Suzy and Gary over for dinner. Emotion overcame me when Suzy told me she was pregnant. That was something we had both wanted for her for so long! Life was great, but as many marriages...their union ended in divorce. Suzy worked extremely hard to keep everything 'friendly' and Amanda definitely benefited from that and is lucky in that she has two parents who absolutely love and adore her and who held no ill will towards each other. Though their divorce could have been mean and nasty, as I guess all can, that wasn't about to happen under my sister's watch!  Suzy has always taken the high road and this past week was an example of that once again as she worked to ensure every detail was tended to.  Last weekend we all went down to Miami in our T-shirts created by Suzy and Amanda that had been printed to mimic those Gary had made years earlier. It had an image of his boat 'Miss Conduct' with a notation "One last cast".  We went to give our final respects, reminisce, and gather at a fish-fry. Son William fried the fish and made cheese grits because he wasn't about to let a caterer in on that. He said, "Gary would have hated that" and so he offered to cook. As an avid fisherman and hunter, it was just as he would have wanted.

I don't tell you this to open our family vault of emotions, but rather to encourage anyone going through divorce or 'family' issues to always remember to take the 'high road'. No matter how difficult it might be at times. It doesn't have to be mean and nasty! ...That does no one any good; while a friendly parting is so much more beneficial for everyone! We all still 'loved' Gary and his sense of humor! We will miss him, but will continue to enjoy his humor as that gene was passed on to Amanda.  The good lives on! Go be the 'Good', FLASHERS.

You can do good today as a matter of fact by wearing orange for the Treasure Coast Food Bank. The entire month of September is shining a light on hunger in our community and there is a different focus each day. Click Here to see and participate in some of the upcoming activities.

Thank you, FLASHER! Go do good for others! :)

Eye ... see you!

The importance of healthy eyes for seniors is not just about vision.  It is common for eye sight to decrease as we get older.  A regular eye test is not only good for eyesight checks, it is also helpful in detecting eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts.  Vision checks are also helpful in detecting other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

WINE SPRITZER REVIVAL

O ur local Publix stores have this suggestion on their website. A popular hit in the '70s and '80s, these delicious sippers fell out of fashion in the '90s. But take another look! Lower in alcohol and calories than straight wine, these bubbly quenchers are great. The classic beverage is half white wine and half club soda, served in an ice-filled wineglass with a twist of lemon. Dry wines, such as Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, make the drink especially refreshing. But if you crave a sweeter sip, a White Zinfandel works well too. (Mom likes it with ginger ale and says red wine works too.) To bring your own spin to the drink, add a splash of fruit juice to the mix. A dash of cranberry or orange juice will add color and flavor; garnish with a sprig of fresh mint for a cooling aroma. When entertaining, make the spritzer extra-festive by adding fruits from the Produce Department - lemons, oranges, kiwifruit, cherries, strawberries and blackberries all look dazzling amidst ice cubes.

HOW LONG IS THE BALL IN PLAY IN THE AVERAGE NFL GAME?

You probably do know that the official season of the NFL began last week. But, you probably don't know this fact from a Reader's Digest report. In a typical  3 hour NFL broadcast, the ball is only in play for roughly 11 minutes! To see the NFL schedule, Click here.

PASSED VS. PAST
PASSED is a verb and the past tense of 'to pass.'
EX: The driver passed me going very fast.
The hunter passed by the deer without even seeing it.
She has passed the age of retirement.

PAST is a noun, adverb, adjective, and a preposition.
EX:   He drove past me going very fast.
The hunter  walked past the deer without seeing it.
She is past the age of retirement.
HELP FOR ARTHRITIS PAIN
.
Here are 15 suggestions for managing arthritis pain from the Arthritis Foundation. Some you will be familiar with, but others you may not. It discusses what it is, what may help it and any risks involved. While you're on the site, look on the left sideboard for the best arthritis diet.  Arthritis is an inflammatory disease, so anything that counters the inflammation helps. (WHY does sugar have to be a no-no on every diet!)

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Parmesan & Balsamic Vinegar
 Roasted  Cauliflower for Arthritis?

This recipe is from the Arthritis Foundation. Cruciferous vegetables like brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy and  broccoli  offer another benefit - a natural compound called sulforaphane. Research on mice shows sulforaphane blocks the inflammatory process and might slow cartilage damage in osteoarthritis (OA). And there's some evidence diets high in this vegetable family could prevent RA from developing in the first place....Sounds great and delicious!

Ingredients:
  • 1 head cauliflower, chopped into florets
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs (optional)
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 450ºF.
  2. Mix oil, marjoram, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
  3. Add cauliflower and toss to coat evenly.
  4. Spread evenly on a baking sheet.
  5. Roast for 15-20 minutes at 450ºF.
  6. Toss the cauliflower with balsamic vinegar and sprinkle with parmesan. Return to the oven for 3-5 minutes and roast until the cheese is melted.
