HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!
Oh happy days!.... There's not a whole lot better than time spent with golden friends! After traveling west with daughter Lilly for just over two weeks, I returned back home to reality. The sting of that 'reality' was lessened because I was able to look forward to the weekend when I would gather with 6 of my college sorority sisters up at our family's beach house here in Vero. We reunited as a group a few years ago and have enjoyed yearly get-togethers ever since. There is something so comfortable being back together with those who 'knew you when'. NR brought lots of pictures, notes and
memorabilia that had us all in stitches as we recalled old memories and made new ones. Several
 of these ladies have had incredible careers and mastered many things. Obviously a 'selfie' has not been checked off that list. I can't believe I don't have a picture of all 7 of us. Hoping to entice my friends to consider 'retiring' in Vero, I served as our local chamber sharing all of the fun things going on in our own back yard. I think they might return in April for the Air Show and possibly again in June for the Film and Wine Festival! My fingers are crossed! Two of them live in Orlando and I might be able to get them over more frequently because we certainly do have a lot going on. There's no doubt that our calendars are filling up! Just take a look at our upcoming events below .... Take your time and make sure you scroll slowly. With more and more events taking place our weekly FLASH is growing in length. Every morsel has some fun just round the corner and I certainly don't want you to miss a thing. Because, you know what we say here at FLASH....Fun is the best thing to have!
Our November Vero Beach and Sebastian calendars will be delivered on Friday and we will
 have them available at the Centennial Finale celebration this weekend. We will also be revealing the two FLASH stickers seen here...Aren't they FUN! Stop by our table in the Heritage Center and spin our wheel for a chance to win one! Lastly, we are working on a new website and calendar program. Over the next week we will be in 'transition mode' and you might encounter a problem if you try to submit events to our calendar. Please give us a week ... I will hopefully be able to share our new calendar access in next week's FLASH.
 Lastly, a very sincere THANK YOU to those who have contributed to son Will's 'Real Men Wear Pink' campaign. If you haven't had a chance to help out, there is still time to do so...

IT'S NOT EASY BEING A QUEEN
The Muppet, Kermit the Frog, said "It's not easy being green." Well, it's not easy being a queen either, but let me explain.
Every year around early June, Miami celebrates the Royal Poinciana Fiesta to encourage the planting and proliferation of the Poinciana and other flowering trees in South
Florida. The festival began in 1937,
so this year was the 82nd anniversary. It usually lasts for several days and includes many different events and tours, and a queen is selected to reign over the pageant. Today, college students must apply to be the Queen and she is chosen by a committee and awarded a scholarship. Many years ago, the selection process was very different.

When it came to deciding who would be the Grand Marshal of the Centennial Celebration Finale parade only one name was discussed. It was a quick decision to invite Alma Lee Loy, affectionately known to many as "the First Lady of Vero Beach" or "the Bridge Lady," to take the honored ride in the lead automobile. But no matter how you say it, Alma Lee Loy is indeed a lady, boasting a history of community service as long as the parade route she will lead beginning at 10 a.m. from the Vero Beach High School, down 14th Avenue on Saturday, October 26. Come join a day filled with fun from sunup to sundown.

Halloween Parade & Costume Contest
October 26, 2019

Hosted by the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department this is a fun family event that is anticipated all year!
The costume contest will be held just prior to the start of the parade at 10:00 a.m. The parade route will start at the
Freshman Learning Center and continue to the Vero Beach Community Center (2266 14 Avenue). There is NO CHARGE to participate! So come on out and have some fun! All children under 17 will receive a free goody bag.
Twenty five prizes for the best costumes will be awarded at the Community Center. Call Gaby Dwyer at (772) 231-4787 for more information.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Stuffed Jack-O-Lantern Bell Peppers
Try this recipe for a fun Halloween supper.
INGREDIENTS
- 6 bell peppers, any color
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 egg
- 4 slices whole wheat bread, cubed
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 small tomato, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup chili sauce
- 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard
- 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
DIRECTIONS
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
- Lightly mix together the ground beef, egg, bread cubes, onion, tomato, garlic, chili sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
- Wash the peppers, and cut jack-o'-lantern faces into the peppers with a sharp paring knife, making triangle eyes and noses, and pointy-teeth smiles. Slice off the tops of the peppers, and scoop out the seeds and cores. Stuff the peppers lightly with the beef stuffing, and place them into the prepared baking dish so they lean against each other.
- Bake in the preheated oven until the peppers are tender and the stuffing is cooked through and juicy, about 1 hour.

When Scott Alexander recently ended his final term on the board of directors of Indian River Community Foundation he was given the honor of selecting the recipient of the Chairman's Nonprofit Leadership Award in recognition of his service as past chairman. In doing so, Alexander chose Angelia Perry, Executive Director of Gifford Youth Achievement Center ("GYAC"), as the recipient of a $2,500 grant to be used for her own organization's professional development. Serving more than 300 youth per day, GYAC works to support Gifford youth to develop self-esteem, character and reach their ultimate potential.
