HAPPY THURSDAY FLASHERS!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and you have undoubtedly seen pink everywhere! I feel certain that we can all name someone we know who has received this diagnosis. If in fact we can all do that ... Then that's just way too many people battling this cancer! Son William, owner of Barefoot Cafe downtown, was approached to be a candidate again this year for the community 'Real Men Wear Pink' campaign. William was happy to jump right back on board and has pledged raise a minimum
of $2,500 and he hopes to surpass that goal!
Since we didn't seem to get the response we were hoping for last week, we came up with a fundraising idea that will sweeten your contribution! Everyone who contributes to

will be entered into a drawing to win a Staycation weekend at our family's oceanfront home in Summer Place; just north of Vero Disney. Sand Castle sleeps up to 8 and just happens to be my favorite place on earth! I think you will love it too! So...PLEASE, make a contribution and help us fight this cancer! Imagine the day when no one receives this diagnosis! It's going to happen! I know it is! :)

I MIGHT HAVE BEEN
A TV NEWS ANCHOR
Television began in Miami in March of 1949. There was only one station and It was the first television station in Florida and only the 16th in the entire country. As I recall, all programming was local until the late 1950s. The technology to bring shows in from New York and California didn't exist yet. Consequently, programming consisted of news broadcasts, morning and afternoon children's shows and whatever local talent could be found. Among these local shows was Uncle Martin's Country Band. Uncle Martin was the father of my dear friend Barbara. He also did weather broadcasts on radio as Frosty Martin and I believe he did the weather on TV as well.
In 1952, I was in my junior year at the University of Miami where Barbara was also in school. One day when we were eating lunch together, she asked me how I would like to be on television. Click Here to read on....

Fulfilling its commitment to honor and serve local veterans throughout the community, St. Paul's Church will host "Healing Our Heroes", a healing conference led by The Reverend Nigel Mumford. The three-day event is being held in collaboration with the Military Mom's Prayer Group from Friday, November 8th to Sunday, November 10th.
Senior Pastor of St. Paul's Church, The Rev. Jonathan G. Robbins stated, "Our love of veterans is steadfast. We have been called by the Lord to offer healing to our heroes throughout Indian River County and surrounding communities, especially those who are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress".

will open gymnastics registration
Saturday, October 19th
at Leisure Square
There are gymnastics and aerial classes available for beginners through advanced students. The program offers instruction for toddlers through teens! Receive training from the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department's USA Gymnastics Safety Certified Instructors. Weekday and Saturday classes are available to fit every schedule. Registration will remain open until classes are at capacity. We recommend arriving early as classes fill up quickly. Participants ages 3 and older will perform in 'Christmas Road Trip', the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department's annual holiday production.

Halloween Parade & Costume Contest

Hosted by the City of Vero Beach Recreation Department this is a fun family event that is anticipated all year!
The costume contest will be held just prior to the start of the parade at 10:00 a.m. The parade route will start at the
Freshman Learning Center and continue to the Vero Beach Community Center (2266 14 Avenue). There is NO CHARGE to participate! So come on out and have some fun! All children under 17 will receive a free goody bag.
Twenty five prizes for the best costumes will be awarded at the Community Center. Call Gaby Dwyer at (772) 231-4787 for more information.

FINALE & PARADE
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26th
 Our year
long celebration
of Vero's 100th birthday will be coming to an end next week. Following the Centennial Parade that will pass along 14th Avenue and conclude about high noon,
everyone is invited to make their way to Pocahontas Park to enjoy a day long program highlighted by live bands, concluding with BeatleBeat, featuring four
talented musicians that re-create the look, style and sound of the BEATLES!
Beatle Beat will
perform two sing-a-long, dance-a-long segments at 3:45-4:30 pm and again from 5:00-6:30 pm. Be prepared to sing along
!
Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and picnics; mingle with old friends and make new ones. Enjoy this glorious fall day...one community, making new memories together!

Constipation is a common problem after age 60, likely due to a combination of a decreased appetite, lower fluid intake, and inactivity. nd perhaps the most special event this fall is the NIGHTS OF LIGHTS which begins the Saturday before Thanksgiving, November 23 and runs through January 31. Nights of Lights has been listed among the top ten holiday light displays in the world by National Geographic. Millions and millions of l
ights cover the city's unique Spanish Colonial architecture and glow from the sidewalks to the rooftops, over the Bridge of Lions, along historic buildings, public spaces, hotels, inns and restaurants throughout approximately 20 blocks. Sounds like fun to me!

Last Friday, October 11th the 5th Annual Pelican Island Preservation Society Indian River Bird and Nature Art Show kicked off National Wildlife Refuge Week with an amazing art show at the , Sebastian River Art Club. Forty-nine area artists participated with 80 pieces of work and over one hundred turned out for the grand opening reception. Debbie Avery planned and coordinated the event and local judges Karen "Keko" Enkonoku, Ginny Piech and Barbara duPont awarded the following artists with ribbons:
