A Prayer Appropriate to Our Day

I’m sharing with you a prayer written by a synod colleague, the Rev. Eric Randolph of Peace

Lutheran Church in St. Charles MD:

Gracious God, we lift up all federal employees, service members and citizens

affected by the government shutdown – grant them comfort, provision and hope

in this time of uncertainty. Inspire our leaders to seek unity over division and the

common good above partisan interests. Soften hearts, guide our nation toward

reconciliation, and help us remember our shared calling to care for one another

as neighbors. In your mercy, bring an end to this stalemate and renew our

commitment to justice, peace and mutual understanding; through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

At a time when we seem more divided than ever, when our reactions to news is often hateful

and retributive, when we seek not the good of the other but vengeance, we ought to take a step back, calm our hearts as well as our minds, and return to the one who shows us mercy and grace. Together, we are much more than we are when divided.

Shalom.

Pr. Mark
