May is the month of Mary , our Blessed Mother
Traditionally, the Catholic Church has honored Mary, the mother of Jesus, during the month of May. The Church teaches that Mary is the first and the greatest of all the disciples of Christ. From the earliest times, Christians have sought Mary's prayers and help. They ask Mary to intercede on their behalf, which is entirely appropriate given Mary's preeminent role in salvation history.

THE 50th ANNUAL PARISH FAIR is OCTOBER 17-18
Safer at Home for many of us has given us time to clean, sort and organize.
Our prayers continue for those directly affected and on the front lines of COVID-19 and we also want to look ahead to brighter times.
We hope that will include the 50th American Martyrs Parish Fair as scheduled.

We'd love to celebrate our Fair's storied history at the 50th Annual American Martyrs Parish Fair this October. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who have attended many, many fairs over the past 49 years. We want to hear from you!

Send your photos, stories, and description of memorabilia you may have from Parish Fairs past to [email protected] .  Please include dates whenever possible.

We're also looking for someone (or a couple someones) who have a love for history and might be interested in helping curate and organize the photos, stories, memorabilia and more.

Thanks and see you at Fair 50!

STEWARDSHIP - Moving Us Closer to God
This weekend’s first reading about the early days of the Church describes a life similar to our current situation. In those days, prayer and worship were centered in the home as they are today due to our Safer at Home directive. Additionally, the early community was concerned about feeding those in need just as we are today. Both situations give us the opportunity to rediscover the concept of a “domestic Church” and the joys of a stewardship way of life.
Our Gospel takes us back to the Last Supper. In this passage, Jesus says He is going to prepare a place for the Apostles. Thomas, who doubted his fellow Apostles about seeing the Risen Lord, has two comments. The first is “we do not know where you are going”, and the second is “How can we know the way?” For some reason these comments remind me of the exchange between Alice and the Cheshire Cat. Alice asks the Cat, “Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” The Cat responds, “That depends a good deal on where you want to get to.”
Many of us are a little like Thomas. While he was an ardent follower of Jesus, he did not have a clear vision of where he was going. Similarly, we all have earthly goals and aspirations but after years of work they frequently don’t produce the feelings we expected. And maybe that’s because those goals did not include Jesus’ purpose for us on earth. Simply put, Jesus wants us is to attain the place He has prepared for us. We get there by doing what the early members of the Church did - through prayer and worship, caring for our neighbors and being active members of the Body of Christ.
Happy Mother’s Day from your Stewardship Commission!

STEPHEN MINISTRY - Confidential Care and Support
Trying not to let your heart be troubled…but!

Jesus’ comforting words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled” sometimes seem to apply to everyone but us. When we’re troubled, we need someone to help us get to a place where we can feel Jesus’ healing touch. A Stephen Minister can be your confidential partner on that journey.
If you are hurting, leave a message on our Stephen Ministry confidential phone line at 310-545-8244 . Deacon Dick and Patti Williams will meet with you to explore whether a Stephen Minister may be a good fit for you!

WALKING ALONG TOGETHER
Many people around the world lack access to safe water, which puts them at risk for health, economic and educational challenges. This is particularly true for young girls and women across Africa who primarily bear the burden of locating and transporting clean water for their families. Deep water wells can change all of this.

Last year, AMS parishioners helped raised funds to drill a new well in Manyana, Uganda, providing villagers with a lifetime of clean water access.

This year, we are hosting a Virtual Walk to raise funds to drill a well in the village of Aukot, Uganda. Many of us are out walking in our neighborhoods to keep healthy anyway! Now you can walk for a meaningful cause. Please consider participating in our Virtual Walk or supporting our Walkers with your donations on Saturday, May 30.
