SOUTH FLORIDA FILM CRITICS

ON THIS WEEK'S FILMS:

Rene Rodriguez of Miami Herald on ONLY GOD FORGIVES:

"REFN'S STYLE AND AESTHETIC BECOME PART OF THE NARRATIVE...the story is given dimension and heft by the elliptical way in which it unfolds. Refn knows exactly what he's doing - he's in on the joke - and he revels in the sensory pleasures of film as an art form"-Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald

Marsha McCreadie of Miami New Times on HANNAH ARENDT:

"Pouncing on the chance to cover the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, resulting in her controversial pronouncement about the disparity between "the mediocrity of the man" and "the horror of the deeds," the writer-philosopher HANNAH ARENDT IS BROUGHT TO LIFE BY A MEZMERIZING BARBARA SUKOWA in Margarethe von Trotta's film."

"★★★★★ HIGHEST RATING! Winding Refn's bizarre infernal creation, an entire created world of fear, really is gripping. EVERY SCENE, EVERY FRAME, IS EXECUTED WITH PURE FORMAL BRILLIANCE."

-Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian

"★★★★★ HIGHEST RATING! This is a darkly amoral, sensually immersive and atmospheric slow-burn to hell that flips the conventional vengeance narrative. Gosling might have a few words to say, but Scott Thomas owns every scene she's in. TIME WILL UNVEIL THE GREATNESS OF REFN'S CUNNING VISION."-Janz Anton Iago, The Movie Jerk

THE BLING RING

Directed by SOFIA COPPOLA/2013/88mins.

With Emma Watson, Claire Julien, Israel Broussard, Taissa Farmiga,

Katie Chang, Leslie Mann, Gavin Rossdale, Paris Hilton

From Oscar-winning writer and director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), The Bling Ring tells the story of a group of teenagers who burglarize celebrities' homes in Los Angeles. Tracking their targets' whereabouts online, they break in and steal their designer clothes and possessions. Through the Bling Ring members' eyes, we see temptations that almost any teenager would feel-what starts out as teenage fun spins out of control and leaves us with a sobering view of today's culture of celebrity and luxury brand obsession. Inspired by actual events, and based on the Vanity Fair article "The Suspects Wore Louboutins" by Nancy Jo Sales, the film features, among others, real-life Bling Ring victim, Paris Hilton.

OPENING NIGHT: Un Certain Regard, Cannes Film Festival

"A modern-day cautionary tale about youth run amok that, for all its ripped-from-the-headlines topicality, still exudes a dreamy, otherworldly perfume." - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
"A slam-dunk conservative critique of American culture."

-Kyle Smith, New York Post
"Deceptively shallow but ultimately fascinating."

-Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York
"A cool and intriguing cinematic journey."-Andrew O'Hehir, Salon

HANNAH ARENDT

Directed by MARGARETHE VON TROTTA/Germany/2013/113mins.

With Barbara Sukowa, Axel Milberg, Janet McTeer

In the award-winning Hannah Arendt, the sublime Barbara Sukowa reteams with director Margarethe von Trotta (Vision, Rosa Luxemburg) for a brilliant new biopic of the influential German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist. Arendt's reporting on the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann in The New Yorker-controversial both for her portrayal of Eichmann and the Jewish councils-introduced her now-famous concept of the "Banality of Evil." Using footage from the actual Eichmann trial and weaving a narrative that spans three countries, von Trotta beautifully turns the often invisible passion for thought into immersive, dramatic cinema.

(In German w/ English subtitles.)

WINNER: Lola Award (German "Oscars")

Best Actress, Silver Award Best Film

PRINCE AVALANCHE

Directed by DAVID GORDON GREEN/USA/2013/94mins.

With Emile Hirsch, Paul Rudd

Driven by striking performances from Rudd and Hirsch, Prince Avalanche is an offbeat comedy about two men painting traffic lines on a desolate country highway that's been ravaged by wildfire. Against this dramatic setting, beautifully shot by frequent Green collaborator Tim Orr, the men bicker and joke with each other, eventually developing an unlikely friendship. Funny, meditative and at times surreal, Prince Avalanche features a moving score by Explosions in the Sky and David Wingo, and was loosely adapted from an Icelandic film called Either Way.

WINNER: Best Director Berlin Film Festival

"A DEEPLY ENJOYABLE, WONDROUS DELIGHT. Meditative, remarkably funny and sublime. It might be Green's most vital film to date."

-Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist on Indiewire
"ONE OF MY FAVORITE EXPERIENCES T AT THE MOVIES IN A LONG TIME. Poignant and hilarious. I felt more transported to a different time and place with Prince Avalanche than I do with most sci-fi time travelling, special effects-heavy movies. Some of those most breathtaking sequences of cinematography in any film this year." -Aly Semigran, Hollywood.com

(In German with English subtitles.)

WINNER: Special Grand Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival

"In what has to be the most significant auteur helmed cinematic motif project since Kieslowski's Three Colors, Ulrich Sidle's Paradise Trilogy blazes on with the second installment, PARADISE: FAITH, which follows LOVE. PARADISE: FAITH happens to be one of the darkest, funniest, and delightful films of the year. Seidl's trilogy will definitely stand as one of the most accomplished cinematic achievements of the decade"
