How to Transform a School Using Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)

As the holiday break approaches, educators and school staff worldwide yearn for a collective pause. Let's be honest, this year has presented its share of challenges. With an increasing number of students in need of our support and staff grappling with burnout, the toll on our mental health can be overwhelming.

Reflecting on the remarkable strides St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf has made in 2023 and contemplating our future, I can't help but be filled with pride for the unwavering dedication and hard work exhibited by our teachers and staff, rising to the occasion no matter the challenge. Their resilience is truly awe-inspiring.

As we stand on the cusp of the new year, we’ve added a lofty vision statement which includes the goal of positioning SFDS as a model school for Deaf, DeafBlind and Deaf Disabled Education. While ambitious, it is certainly within reach. Through our collective efforts, utilizing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports alongside SFDS's core values, we are actively transforming our school. Our aim is clear—we want other schools to follow in our footsteps because the approach works. Allow me to introduce you to our core values, PBIS model and ways of working.

Our school-wide core values guide our actions and decisions:

Language & Communication Rights: We recognize and uphold the fundamental right to language and communication for every individual.

Independence: We foster an environment that empowers students to become independent learners and thinkers.

Accessibility: We ensure that our educational resources and facilities are accessible to all, fostering a barrier- free learning environment.

Inclusivity: We celebrate diversity and embrace an inclusive- universally designed culture where everyone feels valued and respected.

Research Based Practices: We are committed to implementing evidence-based practices that enhance the educational experience of our students.

Asset Based Model: We focus on identifying and leveraging the unique strengths and assets of each student to support their growth and development.

Our Core Values & Connection to PBIS

At the heart of SFDS is our core PBIS slogan: RISE. This simple yet powerful acronym encapsulates our commitment to Respect, Inclusivity, Safety, and Equity. These values aren't just words on paper; they're woven into the fabric of our school culture and guide every interaction within our community.

How PBIS Works at SFDS

Why PBIS Matters:

At SFDS, PBIS isn't just a set of strategies; it's a philosophy that shapes our community. It's about creating an environment where every student feels supported, understood, and valued. By focusing on positive behaviors and fostering a sense of belonging, we empower our students to navigate challenges, develop crucial life skills, and reach their full potential.

Connecting it All Together

In the classroom, RISE is a part of a dedicated period—led with intention and purpose—where our Social Emotional Learning curriculum, Second Step®, comes to life. This instruction not only instills the principles of Respect, Inclusivity, Safety, and Equity (RISE) but also cultivates a deeper understanding of these values in every student.

Our commitment to safety and crisis prevention is equally essential. The entire school community is well-versed in the principles of Safe and Positive Approaches® for preventing and responding to crises from Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health. Emphasizing a non-physical approach, we are not only focused on crisis defusion but on the prevention of such situations.

A Journey of Progress: The Evolution of PBIS

The development and implementation of our comprehensive PBIS programming have been a deliberate and transformative journey, unfolding over four years. This ongoing evolution adapts and grows alongside our community. Supported by ongoing professional development training and coaching, our team diligently crafted the Code of Conduct, ensuring alignment with all aspects of our PBIS systems and procedures.

This evolution is a testament to our dedication to creating an environment where RISE isn't just a concept—it's a lived experience.

Thank you for being a part of the SFDS community, where education is transformative, and every student is set up for success. May you enjoy the break and get the rest you deserve. I look forward to cheering you on in 2024!

Sincerely,

Dr. Jodi L. Falk
