Black Jack Pizza

Efforts are underway to rebuild Black Jack Pizza. The location on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Dallas, TX was shut down after a stolen car chase ended with the car crashing through the front entrance to the popular pizzeria. An employee and customer were injured and the teen car thieves were apprehended. You can help Black Jack Pizza, Dorothy Jones and Terry Jones, by contributing to the Go Fund Me account at https://www.gofundme.com/f/black-jack-emergency-and-recovery-fun?qid=c2507659501e09606b5d3ab85aa755bd

Dozens of moviegoers will walk the red carpet in Fort Worth Thursday prior to a showing of Viola Davis’s The Woman King movie.

The red-carpet is one of several activities surrounding opening night for The Woman King, the highly anticipated blockbuster film shot on location in Africa and featuring award-winning actress Davis as Nanisca, the leader of an elite army of women warriors.
SpaSho And AMPTV To Launch Black Skin Care and Health Series, ‘Très Beau’ Starting Sept. 21
By SpaSho Media

Is beauty only skin deep?
Maybe not, according to these stats from the McKinsey Quarterly; Black Americans spent $6.6 billion on beauty last year which is 11.1 percent of the total US beauty market. The report also noted that most Blacks had a frustrating experience with products and services not geared toward them; however, the inequity in Black-owned based businesses with products specifically for Black skin is a real problem when it comes to getting these products into the mainstream beauty market.

Money Talk :
Social Security
By Rodney A. Brooks

Deciding when to take Social Security is a huge issue, and a very complicated one. A wrong decision can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over your lifetime. That decision can be critically important for African Americans. You need a plan for retirement that includes at least some savings other than Social Security. First, a couple of facts.

  • Three quarters of minority beneficiaries rely on Social Security for at least half of their retirement income. That’s true for only half of whites.
MY TRUTH:
A Reality Check
By Cheryl Smith

Recently during a speech, I praised the Black Press: “As the Black Press celebrates 195 years, I thank the National Newspaper Publishers Association for continuing to be that VOICE, even when those we are speaking for sometimes don’t realize that all ice is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Some thought that was a powerful statement because in essence, I was saying that no one else’s ice is colder.

Internet connectivity is essential for Dallas students, and free access is possible

13% of DISD students don’t have high-speed internet at their homes
By Leslie Ward

Today, learning is in the hands of students, taking place outside of the classroom nearly as much as inside the classroom. With seemingly endless online resources to tackle everything from spelling tests to algebra, Texas students are more involved in their education than ever before. With these digital tools, the only thing students need is an internet connection, and they can transform any place into a classroom.

In Haiti, “gangs” reside where caring for community and corruption collide

CAP-HAITIEN — After Jameson Davilma's mother died from an illness when he was 13, the boy often counted on neighbors near his Cité Soleil home to survive. Sometimes, usually late at night, a neighbor might send him on en errand to buy food. Only then would Davilma have a bite from what the neighbor shared.

California’s New 988 Suicide and
Mental Health Crisis Line
NNPA Newswire/BlackPressUSA
By Breanna Reeves | Black Voice News

On July 16, California debuted the new suicide and crisis hotline number: 988. The short, three-digit federal number is now active across the nation and is an alternative to calling 911 for people experiencing mental health crises. Recently, 988 has drawn criticism across social media because of the possibility dialing the number could elicit a police response. According to a spokesperson from the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number, fewer than 2% of Lifeline calls involve emergency services.
The Path

As we walk through life's journey, we leave footprints. Some just show where we are going. Others redirect us when we get lost. Still others remain to guide those we leave behind. I see your footprints.
