JAM produces live coverage of local selectboard and school board meetings for Hartford, Norwich, and Hartland, VT; Hanover, NH and Lebanon, NH (SAU88 only) to inform the public, promote civic democratic engagement, and safeguard transparency in government. Many nights of the week, you will find JAM's staff covering as many as 4 simultaneous meetings. You can tune in LIVE on JAM cable channels 1075/1085 (Comcast) or 169/170 VTEL, streaming on our website, or JAM's YouTube channel, or find recordings by searching JAM On-Demand for your town's meeting recordings. It's a particularly challenging budget year for Upper Valley towns. JAM commends the elected officials, volunteers and citizens demonstrating their commitment to grassroots democracy and collective problem-solving. Major Attraction
"Why isn't Black history American history?" Former Hartford Selectboard member Joe Major posed that question during a talk last week in Windsor sponsored by JEDI, the town's Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee. "Be comfortable in the uncomfortable," said Major, who now serves as a JAM board member. "We cannot progress unless we're uncomfortable and talk about things we don't talk about."

Labor Pains
Dartmouth labor groups held a town meeting for unionization last month at the Church of Christ in Hanover. Rev. Gail Kinney of Meriden, NH called for a faith-and-labor alliance. Lebanon City Councilor Karen Liot Hill, a Dartmouth alum, spoke in solidarity. "I've been here 34 years....Until the student-worker collective came on the scene, nothing really happened, and in two years, it's incredible," said SEIU local president Chris Peck.

Perfect Ten
Jeff Friedman of West Lebanon read from his latest (and tenth book), Ashes in Paradise, at the Norwich Bookstore. He calls his work prose poems, comic sketches, micro-stories, and fabulist inventions. Many were written "during dark times," according to him. They tell tales of a monster hunter who may be a monster, a woman who gives birth to herself, as well as avocados, test tube orgasms, vampires, spots, masks, and a chair.

Solving the VT Housing Riddle
That's a major goal of State Treasurer Mike Piecialk. The good news is young affluent families are moving here. The bad news is the supply of affordable housing is tight. "It's not going to get better anytime soon...for a decade or more," he told listeners at Hartford's Cornerstone Community Center. "Senior housing is going to be critical for us to focus on moving forward."
