Happy New Year!


I hope you enjoyed the holiday season and are ready to back into the swing of things for the start of 2025.


As a reminder, Christmas Tree collection has begun and takes place Wednesdays through January 29. Please have trees curbside by 7 am and do not place them in plastic bags.


Thanks again to everyone who came out to take part in our special holiday events in December, and an extra special thanks to everyone who decorated their homes for the Holiday Lights Trail sponsored by Parks & Recreation. You all really helped to make the season shine in the City! Take a look at the Parks & Recreation Facebook page for photos of the winners!


There will be a Planning & Zoning Public Hearing on January 22 regarding the proposed changes to the City’s zoning regulations [see more below in Planning & Economic Development].


The City will host a special Black History Month Celebration on February 1 at the City of Groton Municipal Building. We hope you're able to join us! More details below...


There will be a Planning & Economic Development Public Hearing on February 19 regarding a proposed amendment to the Plan of Conservation & Development and adoption of the City’s first Community Resilience Plan [see more below in Planning & Economic Development].


A reminder that the Municipal Building will be closed on Monday, January 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Business will resume as usual on January 21. If your trash/recycling is normally picked up on Monday, it will be picked up on Tuesday that week.


The next United Way Mobile Food Pantry is scheduled for Friday, January 24, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at St. John’s Christian Church. Click here to view the full United Way Mobile Food Pantry calendar.

STOREFRONT WINDOW & DOOR REPLACEMENT

This week, the Municipal Building storefront windows and doors will start to be replaced, marking phase two of the storefront renovation which began in June 2024.


The project is expected to take approximately two weeks (baring weather delays).


During construction, access to the Municipal Building will NOT be impacted. In addition, there will be an ADA accessible entrance available at all times during the project. 

NEIGHBORHOOD TRAFFIC CALMING REQUEST APPLICATION

The City has made an application available for those residents requesting traffic calming measures be evaluated for their neighborhood/street.


All requests will be reviewed by the local traffic authority. All requests should be submitted to the City of Groton, c/o Local Traffic Authority, 295 Meridian Street, Groton, CT 06340 (via USPS, dropped off at the Clerk’s office, or emailed to lta@cityofgroton-ct.gov). The form must be completed in its entirety for the request to be considered. Requests do not result in the automatic installation or construction of a traffic calming measure.

RELOCATION OF MEMORIAL BENCHES

To protect our memorial benches at Eastern Point Beach from winter storm damage (particularly those closest to the water's edge where high wind/waves take their toll) we have moved some from their permanent locations to a more protected area on the property. Once the winter season of storms have passed, they will be moved back to their usual locations.

CHRISTMAS TREE COLLECTION

PICKUP SCHEDULE FOR TRASH, RECYCLING AND BULKY WASTE

It is important that you have your items out for pick up by the following times (NO exceptions)

6:00 AM— Memorial Day to Labor Day (Summer Schedule)

7:00 AM—Rest of the year

 Most routes and starting points have changed, therefore, the time we arrive at your house has also changed. It is imperative for you to have your items out in time.

 

Trash & Recycling Pickup Schedules for Holidays:

  • If a holiday falls on a Monday, and this is your pickup day, it will be picked up on Tuesday
  • If a holiday falls on a Tuesday, and this is your pickup day, it will be picked up on Wednesday
  • If a holiday falls on a Wednesday, and this is your pickup day, it will be picked up Thursday
  • If a holiday falls on a Thursday, and this is your pickup day, it will be picked up on Friday*
  • If a holiday falls on a Friday, and this is your pickup day, it will be picked up on Thursday*

 

*For Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving, if these are your pickup days, Thursday Thanksgiving Day will be picked up on Wednesday morning and Friday the Day-After Thanksgiving Day will be picked up on the following Monday morning.


We will take only 1-2 cans or bags of yard clippings, brush or hedges with your trash. Call 860-446-4127 with any questions.

SHORE AVENUE SEAWALL RECONSTRUCTION

The Shore Avenue reconstruction project began on May 28. Until further notice, the portion of Shore Avenue between South Prospect Street and Circle Avenue is closed to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  • If you see a catch basin that is clogged or full, please report it to the Public Works Department for cleaning at 860-446-4127.


  • The City of Groton sells trash containers. The design is compatible with automated and semi-automated lifters, fit onto our garbage truck and are easy to tilt and roll. Click here for more information.

The Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing on January 22, 2025 at 6:30pm, Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian Street to hear and possibly act on the following matters:

Thames River Heritage Park Seeks New Boat Operator


Thames River Heritage Park Foundation is accepting proposals for a boat operator to manage the boats for the Park’s Hop-on Hop-off Harbor Cruise / Water Taxi service, history-themed tours and charters for the 2025 season. The boat operation was previously managed by Scott Arsenault of Vixen Ledge Marine, who retired at the end of the 2024 contract.


Proposal deadline: February 3, 2025.
