 New Hampshire Downloadable Books

The library's paid subscription to NH Downloadable Books , operated by the NH State Library and funded through Federal Funds and a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), provides patrons access to very expensive content, in a very cost-effective manner. This would be impossible for the library to do alone, and without the wide selection of available titles. Patrons can download e-books, audiobooks, and magazines to their computer, tablet, smartphone or Kindle. Download the free to use "Libby for Overdrive" app from your device’s App Store.

The Libby app will be used and linked directly to your library card. Be aware that if you are not able to download an item, it may be because you have an overdue book on your account,

or your card has expired.

Information about NHDB HERE

March 24, 2025

Dear Dunbarton Public Library patrons,

In an Executive Order signed on 3/14/25, the President called for the defunding of the Institute of Museum and Library Science (IMLS), the federal agency charged with distributing congressionally approved funds to state libraries and to the library, museum and archives programs. At this time much is unknown.

1.     The federal funds from this agency fund the New Hampshire State Library’s Interlibrary Loan system, the van drivers, administrative staff, and computer software used to order items. It is important to note that using the State-wide Interlibrary Loan system, our library borrowed 221 items for patrons and lent out 735 items to other libraries last year. Interlibrary loan is an important service, especially for small libraries like ours that have small budgets. We also rely on Interlibrary loan for book kits and books for multiple book discussion groups. Losing this service will impact our patrons and library.

2.    Also funded at the New Hampshire State Library with IMLS funds is the platform for the Libby app used for downloadable e-Books and audiobooks. We know how much our community utilizes New Hampshire Downloadable Books—last year we downloaded 5805 items, which is a large increase from previous years. The loss of downloadable content would have a very strong effect.

3.    Also funded is the New Hampshire State Library’s Talking Books for the Blind and Physically Handicapped program. If these funds are cut, these services will go away.

As of March 31, 2025 all IMLS staff were placed on administrative leave.

We will continue to provide information to our patrons as it becomes available.

Sincerely,

Dunbarton Public Library Board of Trustees

and Library Director Mary Girard

Children and Family

New Hampshire 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The concept is simple, the rewards are priceless. Read a book (any book) to your newborn, infant, and/or toddler.
The goal is to read 1,000 books before your little one starts kindergarten- and yes you can repeat books! We know that all kids have favorites! If you read just 1 book a night, you will have read 365 books in a year. By the time they start kindergarten, it's possible to have read 1,825 books together!
Not only will your child benefit from having a larger vocabulary, and more interest in reading, but studies have shown that reading to a child daily is an early indicator of academic success. The bonding time while you read to/with a child is possibly one of the most wonderful benefits!
Do you have questions? Need more logs?
 Please call the library!

Orion Starblast Telescope

Did you know that we have a telescope available for you to check out? Adult patrons in good standing can borrow the telescope for one week. The telescope was donated and is fostered by the NH Astronomical Society, part of the Library Telescope Program. Call for information.

Presented by Scott Biron

Tuesday, April 22, 2025 at 6:30 PM

Upper Town Hall

Join master fly tyer Scott Biron for an engaging and educational demonstration that combines craftsmanship, history, and artistry. In this presentation, Scott will tie a fly while delving into its rich history and connection to the region. He will discuss the hook and its maker, the traditional materials used in the tying process, and the cultural significance of these timeless patterns.

Scott Biron brings decades of experience and passion to the art of fly tying, having learned the craft in the 1960s in New Hampshire’s North Country. A juried Master Artist in the NH Traditional Arts Program, Scott has been recognized with multiple NH Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, including for his expertise in Traditional New England Streamer patterns and Classic Salmon Flies.

Scott’s work highlights the artistry and history of New Hampshire’s legendary fly tyers, preserving their lost patterns through extensive research, instruction, and publications. As a member of the Catskill Fly Tyers Guild and an Ambassador for the American Museum of Fly Fishing, Scott shares his expertise nationally and internationally. His contributions to American Fly Fisher and the Atlantic Salmon Journal reflect his dedication to this intricate craft.

Whether you’re an avid angler, a history enthusiast, or simply curious about this traditional art form, Scott’s presentation promises an inspiring look at the artistry and heritage of fly tying.

 Drew Groves Photography Exhibit

A new photography exhibit is up at the library. This time Drew's beautiful photos are centered on a new theme:

The Vulnerable - Those creatures I was blessed to have experienced, and that are recognized as having a precarious existence on Earth. They are listed as Vulnerable, Nearly Threatened, Threatened, Protected, Endangered, or even Critically Endangered. I present them so as to highlight their incredible uniqueness and critical importance to the preservation of the balance of our natural world. Included are those North American migratory bird species that are protected under the Migratory Bird Species Act of 1918 - over 50% of which are in significant population decline.

With the exception of the imperiled representatives from the Belize Zoo (Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Facility), all wildlife photography is of free roaming species in their natural habitats or open ecosystems.

_______________________________

About Drew:

"I am a retired biology teacher from Bow High School, as well as nature photographer. My intense passion with photographing the natural world was originally fueled mostly from wanting to share the amazing splendor of pristine wildernesses and the wonder of wildlife that I witnessed, with my family, and friends. Later, I realized how impactful my images could be in teaching students and others to appreciate and respect the beauty and delicate balance of our natural world.

I spend much of my time exploring New Hampshire’s ‘open spaces’ along with other areas up and down the east coast, Alaska…..anywhere! I have taken several student groups to study diverse ecosystems including Belize and South Africa, and joined a Teacher Fellowship group as part of Ecology Project International in Costa Rica to aid in Leatherback sea turtle conservation. Needless to say, my camera equipment rarely leaves my side!! I am often asked, “What do you like to photograph?”, to which I reply, “Whatever gets in front of the lens - from the smallest dragonfly or ladybug, to the grandeur of a mountain ridge!”
