We are continuing our series,
Riddles of Grace, the Parables of Jesus
with Matthew 13:44-46.
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it."
These are both stories of finding - one accidental and the other after years of intensive and intentional searching, which give us two differing modes of discovery. It is odd to me that such divergent themes of finding would be joined under the heading of, "...the Kingdom of God is like... " What does this tell us about the nature of God's Kingdom? Do we stumble upon it accidentally or do we only find it after years of diligent searching? Is it both? These are a lot of questions for such little Scripture. Bring these questions and your own to worship this Sunday as we seek God's wisdom for how to hear this word from Jesus. See you in church!
