Event Wrap-Up
11th Annual Pan-African Studies Forum
On May 9th, Cal State LA's Pan-African Studies Department hosted its 11th Annual Pan-African Studies Forum at the Luckman Theater. Featured speaker, Dr. Yusef Salaam of the Central Park Five, recounted his experiences of being wrongfully convicted of rape in 1989. Since his release in 2002, he has committed his life to educating the public on mass incarceration, police brutality and misconduct, false confessions, press ethics and bias, race and law, and the disparities in the criminal justice system especially for young men of color.
2018 Faculty Retreat
The 2018 Faculty Retreat was held Friday, May 11, 2018 at Luminarias Restaurant. Dean Scott-Johnson kicked off the all-day retreat by welcoming the attendees and congratulating all on a successful academic year. She acknowledged faculty who were promoted, NSS staff and faculty who were named Distinguished Women by the University, and faculty who received the Faculty Mentor Honoree recognition by the University.

Faculty gave an overview of their research in a "lightning talk" format with a Q &A session that followed. Attendees also engaged in the team-building activities, Memory Wall and an NSS office trivia game.

End of the Year History Banquet
The History Department celebrated its annual End of the Year Banquet featuring distinguished guest alumni speakers, Juan Garcia and Katie Mishler.

Hana Villafana was the recipient of the department’s Monica Taylor Award.

BIOBASH and the LSAMP Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Department of Biological Sciences and LSAMP celebration, BIOBASH, showcased undergraduate students research. The event also celebrated the retirement of Dr. Margaret Jefferson and Dr. Sandra Sharp. Associate Dean, Dr. Nancy McQueen, recalled fond memories of both Dr. Jefferson and Dr. Sharp and highlighted their invaluable contributions to the College.

They will be dearly missed!

2018 Spring Civic and Social Entrepreneurship Summit (CaSES)
Over 200 students from the political science, sociology, and teacher education disciplines pitched their entrepreneurial ideas at the 2018 Spring Civic and Social Entrepreneurship Summit.

Some ideas from the students include:

  • Culturally competent apps to reduce discrepancies in math education among elementary school students
  • A mobile arts center with accompanying tailored curriculum that uses the power of art to teach students about social justice
  • An app for youth that simultaneously preps students for college, builds core professional competencies and encourages civic engagement on state and local levels
  • Efforts to improve the representation of Latinas in STEM and politics
