Today Was A Good Day

WEDNESDAY, JULY 8, 7 p.m.,
via Zoom
Join with the broad Saint Mark’s community for a watch party of parishioner David Wild’s documentary film,
Today Was A Good Day.
This
25-minute film
offers different perspectives on the day-to-day life of a caregiver, as seen through the eyes of three Southeastern Michigan residents who have taken on the many roles and responsibilities of caring for an aging parent. Afterwards, we’ll have a chance to hear David reflect on the film and discuss the caregiver experience, including for those with dementia.

On the Rose Window:
A short video about Saint Mark's
|
|
In preparation for the screening and discussion of
Today Was a Good Day
on Wednesday, take five minutes to
enjoy this brief video titled
On the Rose Window
, the most recent installment of David’s ongoing series
On Saint Mark’s Cathedral
.
This video was premiered to the congregation during a Sunday morning 10 a.m. forum on February 2 of this year, but has not been publicly available online until now. For this video, David interviewed architect Jim Olson, who oversaw the design of the cathedral renovations both in 1996/97 and in 2017/18, and artist Ed Carpenter, who designed the reredos screen and rose window itself. Though only five minutes long, it is filmed and edited with David’s characteristic subtlety and flair.

Tent City 3 Returns to Saint Mark's Cathedral
In a recent
message to the parish, Dean Thomason has announced that
Tent City 3 will be returning to the Saint Mark's Cathedral Campus this week, and remaining here as our guests and neighbors until mid-September. We hosted Tent City every summer for 12 years in a row, 2001–2013, and, while we decry and lament the continuing crisis of homelessness in our city, we are delighted to be able to welcome them back in these extraordinary times. Reactions to the announcement have been extremely positive on the part of those who remember their previous visits. The cathedral is blessed by their presence in many ways. Direct any questions to Canon Chapman,
cchapman@saintmarks.org.

SERIES
: FOUR WEDNESDAYS, JULY 15 & 29, and August 12 & 26, 7 P.M.
At this critical moment in our nation's history, we will
undertake a four-week study and discussion series to confront racism
—its theology, history, and presence in our lives today—and ways to move forward toward justice. The series is open to all, recognizing the responsibility for change falls on white people.
The in-depth series follows on four Wednesday nights (July 15 and 29, August 12 and 26) and will require advance registration and a commitment to attend all sessions and read/watch articles and videos in advance. More details to come soon, but you can get started by reading Ijeoma Oluo’s book,
So You Want to Talk About Race

Saint Mark’s Heeding the Call to Get Out the Vote
WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 7 P.M.

tells us
: “
It is a Christian obligation to vote, and more than that, it is the church’s responsibility to help get souls to the polls.
”
Come hear about the Vote Faithfully movement in the Church – working together to empower every voice to get freely to the polls.
We’re looking at ways to encourage voter registration and to speak out against voter suppression
. We will hear from community members of their personal voting experience, share stories, share a faith perspective on voting your own conscience, and explore ways we can make a difference in valuing every voice through every vote.

Taking White Supremacy to Court: The Charlottesville Case
TUESDAY, JULY 28, 5 P.M.,
presented by Temple de Hirsch-Sinai, co-sponsored by Saint Mark's Cathedral
Integrity First for America
(IFA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to holding those accountable who threaten longstanding principles of our democracy—including our country's commitment to civil rights and equal justice. The IFA is backing
Sines v. Kessler
, the landmark federal lawsuit filed by a coalition of Charlottesville community members against the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and hate groups responsible for the August 2017 violence. Trial is scheduled for October 2020. This case has the potential to be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bankrupt and dismantle the organizations at the heart of the far-right extremist movement of today. (Read a
New York Times
article about the complexities of the case
here
.) On Tuesday July 28 Temple de Hirsch Sinai will present an online forum with representatives from IFA, discussing the history and future plans for the lawsuit, and the broader context of hate groups in America.

Resources to Support Protesters and Racial Equity in Western Washington
Cathedral clergy and staff have compiled a
list of resources
for learning about and confronting racism and white supremacy in ourselves, our community, and our nation.
The diocese of Olympia has compiled an additional list here
. We hope these resources provide support for the difficult work that we are being called to do to dismantle unjust systems, institutions, and ideologies and create a society in which the dignity of every human being is respected.

Spirited Women's Summer Gathering
THURSDAY, JULY 30, 6–7:30 p.m.,
via Zoom
The Spirited Women Planning group has decided it is best not to meet in person, but to provide guidance for a "meditative walk" alone or in pairs, in a park, on a trail, in one's own neighborhood, or in or around your home... and then gather together virtually to share that experience. We are also asking that you take a photo on your walk and send it along with a personal reflection of your experience to Mary Segall,
mesegall@icloud.com
. Canon Cristi Chapman, who is now recovering successfully from appendix surgery, will provide guidance to us on spiritual walking-so stay tuned. Thank you.

The Wisdom of Children:
An Audio Project from Saint Mark’s
About a month ago, Dean Steve mentioned how much adults are missing the voices and laughter of children in their lives during quarantine. He had an idea about recording the voices of children from the Saint Mark's community, so that we can all hear from them, in their own words, about what their lives are like now. Follow the link below to hear a beautifully edited 18-minute audio piece featuring some of the kids of the Saint Mark's community, guaranteed to lift your spirits and nourish the soul. For convenience, it is also available as a special episode of the
Saint Mark's Prayer Podcast for Children & Families.

Creation Care Ministry
NEXT MINISTRY MEETING:
MONDAY, JULY 13, 6:30 P.M.,
via Zoom
The Creation Care Ministry meets monthly, and is currently focusing on 4 areas: spiritual exercises to connect our faith with our care of the earth, training on a measurement tool to help St. Mark’s households measure their carbon footprint, researching carbon offset programs to share with the congregation, and examining personal habits around food and energy usage. Email
marjorie@ringness.org
for the Zoom link to join our next meeting and be part of the ongoing work and conversation.
This week’s thought:
The world is facing a mass extinction of species, including pollinators. Bees are critically important to our global food production and nutritional security. Estimates suggest that pollinators directly contribute US$235–$577 billion to global food production each year.
Without pollinators, many of the foods we depend on would become scarce, putting life on our planet at risk.
When planting your flower garden this summer, consider planting pollinator-friendly plants.

Saint Mark's Livestream Now Available on Facebook Live
Since the cathedral switched to
Vimeo
as its streaming platform, new possibilities for our livestream have become available. Beginning this weekend, Saint Mark’s will now be presenting the
Sunday morning liturgy livestream simultaneously on Facebook in addition to on the website
as usual. We successfully streamed last Tuesday’s diocesan ordination liturgy to Facebook, and—even though it was not publicized in advance—over 60 people from around the country were able to experience and participate in the liturgy who may not otherwise have joined. If you follow the cathedral on Facebook, you will get a notification automatically when the livestream begins, or simply visit
https://www.facebook.com/SaintMarksSeattle
around 10:45 a.m.
If you try watching on Sunday morning in this new way, let Greg Bloch know what it was like and how it worked for you at
gbloch@saintmarks.org.

the video recording is now available
. Despite extraordinary logistical and technical challenges, the service went beautifully, with almost 400 people joining the livestream. Many thanks to for the hard work of all involved, particularly Cathedral Sacristan Michael Seewer.
