THIS WEEK AT ST JOHN'S

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we will be celebrating Gordon’s years at St. John’s (see details below).

I was there for the start and, after a lengthy hiatus, I will be here for this celebration too.

Some events of interest to note from around the same time as the introduction of Gordon as St. John’s Music Director follow:

Coca Cola introduced New Coke. Gordon lasted much better. In fact New Coke was described as the worst marketing blunder in history. Not Gordon. Good committee choice.

Windows 1 was released. Good stuff but nothing of the staying power of Gordon. Speaking of lasting power - CD’s were introduced. Lasted a little longer - but no match for Gordon.

Michael Jordan joined the National Basketball Association. He would be Rookie of the year and later signed a lucrative partnership with Nike shoes. Sorry, Gordon, I think he is likely the better known and will have lasting power deep into the Future.

Rupert Murdoch launched Fox Broadcasting

No comment. Just noticed it.

Kodak abandoned the instant camera business. Don’t know why. Seemed good to many of us. Would we ever have such photographic ease again?

Food trends included: Angel hair pasta, Chocolate mousse, French onion soup

Gordon was always on top of the trends. Speaking of trends, among the years we’re remembering, Leonard Cohen (First We Take Manhattan) and Neil Young (Landing on Water) were singing for us.

What do you think, Gordon?

Canadian soccer (football) players were working toward what would be their last FIFA men’s World Cup appearance until just last year. Long stretch in the wrong direction - you got it right Gordon.

Live Aid concerts around the world raised many millions to help starving Africa all singing together We Are The World.

Gordon, we have enjoyed having your ministry; our music programs are a source of pride; you have had an outstanding record on training so many former clergy; we thank you for your influence on the city of Ottawa.

God bless you and Gaston into a long, rich and happy future.

TAKE NOTE

2023 Art Credo – That’s a Wrap!

The 44th Art Credo was, once again, a big success! In addition to raising some funds, we engaged the wider community (artists, visitors from out of town & folks in the neighbourhood), and a helpful team of parishioners (and friends) had fun setting up the exhibit, staffing the sitting shifts and closing the show. By the numbers, this year we had: 48 artists (incl. 9 first-time participants), 115 artworks, and 780 visitors came through the doors. A total of 23 artworks sold.

In conjunction with Art Credo, we hosted two new events this year. The Paint Along Night had a mix of parishioners and members of the community with 16 attendees who each took home a 12” X 24” painting they had produced themselves in only 2 hours. Everyone had a lot of fun and many requested we do it again some time.

Our Poetry Open Mic night was MCed by the Rev’d Al Budzin. Eight poets spoke—several of them were artists and a couple were members of St John’s. The event attracted about 20 people.
