THIS WEEK AT THE EMERSON

TAB BENOIT

Tab Benoit is a four-time Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and guitarist who, for more than thirty years, has built a remarkable career on the foundation of his gritty and soulful Delta swamp blues. He has acquired a devoted legion of fans along the way, as well as five Blues Music Awards, including BB King Entertainer of the Year (twice) and an induction into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

After a 13-year hiatus, Tab is back with his latest effort, I Hear Thunder, on his own label, Whiskey Bayou Records. The new album was his first #1 in the Billboard charts in over 30 years.

Tab’s accomplishments as a musician are matched only by his devotion to the environmental health of his native Louisiana Wetlands. Benoit is the founder and driving force behind Voice of the Wetlands, an organization working to preserve the coastal waters of his home state. In 2010, he received the Governor’s Award for Conservationist of the Year from the Louisiana Wildlife Federation. Benoit has also starred in the iMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary narrated by Meryl Streep on Hurricane Katrina’s effects, with a call to protect and restore the wetlands.

SUMMER ART CAMP!

In less than two weeks, our first session of Summer Art Camp begins!

We are thrilled to introduce our instructor team: a talented group of creative young people that are ready to teach and lead your kids with joy and energy.

My name is Rachel Rasmussen. I’m originally from Broadus, MT and I’m a senior here at MSU studying art education. When I’m not making art or in school, you can find me out swing dancing, climbing up some rocks, or hiking with my dog, Rocco. I’m super excited to be working with your kiddos here at the Emerson this summer!

My name is Megan, I grew up in Bozeman, and in my free time I love being outside and oil painting. I’m excited to be back at art camp again this year!

Hi, I'm Owen Hodgson! I was born and raised here in Bozeman, and I am currently in school for art and psychology in Colorado. I love exploring the outdoors and I am a big runner, and I recently ran a marathon in crocs! I think painting is my favorite art to make right now, but that changes all the time. I'm so excited to be a part of the Emerson art camp this summer!

My name is Nathalie and I am originally from Colorado! I moved to Montana to be a ski instructor and have enjoyed getting outside and exploring the state ever since. I love going to live music, trying new recipes in the kitchen, and traveling whenever I can. My favorite mediums to work with currently are oil pastels and clay.

MUTUAL

BY KIRSTEN KAINZ

Mutual

Kirsten Kainz

Jessie Wilber Gallery, Lobby Gallery, and Galleria Hall Popup Gallery

In Mutual, Kainz utilizes unexpected, everyday materials to create sculptural creatures that invite viewers into a more personal and emotional connection with the living world. Her work suggests that we are inherently wired to respond to beauty and that losing sight of it can have profound consequences.

“At its core, this exhibition is about connection,” Kainz shares. “We take care of the things we love. My work is intended to help us feel more love and connection with the fascinating creatures and ecosystems that we rely on for life. Our fates are mutual.”

Kainz is widely recognized for her large-scale iron animal sculptures as well as her paintings of ephemeral landscapes and bold, expressive horses. Across mediums, her work is unified by a deep reverence for nature and a sense of urgency to protect what is increasingly at risk. She invites viewers not only to admire the natural world, but to honor and care for it.

CALDERA

BY CHRISTOPHER CAMPBELL

Weaver Room Gallery

My method is slow, but once moving through the land I work assuredly and intuitively, I find there is little equivocation over what to photograph. I question little when moved to expose a sheet of film. The questions come after. I believe there are always far more questions than answers. The heavy lifting, after I put a photograph out into the world, is up to the viewer. If I have done my job the weight should be manageable in its own way by anyone willing or able to take the time.

Most of my photography these days utilize a 4×5 view film camera. I develop the film in my dark room and then scan the resulting negatives into my computer creating digital files. I will then make subtle adjustments of light value similar to what I might do in the dark room, utilizing Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. I then make 5×7 inch inkjet prints which I can use to evaluate and plan my film prints.

Once I have decided what I want to make a silver gelatin print of, I return to the darkroom with the original negative and fully process that into a final archival silver gelatin print. A final note of clarification: the creation of a silver gelatin print does not utilize digital technology at all. All adjustments affecting elements of value, tonality and contrast are made manually in the darkroom.
