Join us this evening at 7:00 p.m. for the Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting to get up to speed on the Community Center project developments. The agenda includes community outreach updates, an annotated building floor plan review and finally, an interactive component to gather community input/prioritization on preferred design elements and conceptual options.

This Saturday, June 20, is the longest day of the year, and it is also National Solar Day! In honor of the summer solstice, we invite you to consider signing up for a free, no-obligation solar energy proposal for your home through Peninsula SunShares.

Burlingame, along with 12 other neighboring communities, joined Peninsula Sunshares to make installing solar simpler and more affordable for residents. The program offers bulk rates with two leading solar vendors to provide residents with significant discounts on solar installations. Also, a Peninsula Sunshares public workshop is happening this Saturday in San Carlos. Learn about the basics of solar, meet with the solar installers, and check out demonstrations. This event is on Saturday, June 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the 2nd Floor of the San Carlos Library located at 610 Elm Street in San Carlos. Happy National Solar Day!

Ready or not, here they come!

 

Do you have a child starting Kindergarten next year?  Join the Recreation Department and Kindergarten teacher Kellyann Copeland for a wonderful four-week journey bridging the transition from pre-school to Kindergarten!  Classes run from June 22 - July 17 (no class 7/3), 8:45 a.m. -11:45 a.m. at Franklin Elementary.  

 

A developmentally appropriate program integrating language arts, mathematics, science, music, and art will be offered through a thematic approach.  Children will have the opportunity to participate in small and large group instruction while building social skills with peers.

sanmateoSan Mateo to Host Community Meeting
Status Update on the US-101/Peninsula Ave Interchange
 

The City of San Mateo Public Works Department will be hosting a community meeting to provide a status update on the developments of a possible. US-101/Peninsula Avenue interchange project.  The initial study and project development with Caltrans has been completed.  The City of San Mateo Public Works Department is currently seeking funding for the environmental review phase.  

This project will ultimately relocate the US-101 southbound on- and off-ramps from East Poplar Avenue to Peninsula Avenue to eliminate the partial interchange condition and create a single, full access interchange at Peninsula Avenue and Airport Boulevard.

The meeting will be held at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 at the King Community Center, 725 Monte Diablo Ave in San Mateo. Visit the City of San Mateo website for more information.

The City of Burlingame, in collaboration with Recology, Rethink Waste and SFGoodwill is hosting an e-scrap recycling event and tech donation drive on June 27.  In addition contributing to zero waste, your donation will help the Goodwill create jobs and provide job training. Residents may also bring up to three standard size bankers boxes (10"x12"x15") of paper per household for secure, onsite shredding.

Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride

Come join the fun! The 12th Annual Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Bike Ride, part of the 29th Annual Burlingame Criterium, is the largest kids' bike ride in the US. The event is scheduled for Sunday, June 28, 2015. Each year, close to 700 children twelve & under (including 250 four & under) pedal to the finish with thunderous applause. Feeling proud of their "win," each child happily receives a medal, popsicle and goody bag.

 

Ryan's Ride is a labor of love to memorialize Ryan, who died to Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood in July 2003 at age 2 years old. Ryan and his twin brother Matthew were born after their father battled and survived cancer.

 

While the event is free, children participants raise pledges for the Ryan Phua Memorial Fund, established through the LIVESTRONG Foundation to fund cancer-related programs in the Bay Area. Over $650,000 has been raised so far. There will be free entertainment for the whole family after the ride. Top fundraisers receive gift certificates to a local toy store or a brand new bike. A portion of the proceeds will also be donated to the Burlingame Community for Education (BCE) Foundation.

Choose between one of two tours offered, both starting at 1 p.m. The first tour meets at the Burlingame Avenue Railroad Station at 290 California Dr. and describes the three-decade growth of Burlingame Avenue, from wealthy equestrian playground in 1895 to a bustling suburb. The second tour option will meet at the Wells Fargo building at 1145 Broadway and explore the growth of the Town of Easton adressing why Burlingame has two main business streets, why Broadway has an arch and other interesting tidbits.
