....Sterling Federal Credit Union is a financial cooperative chartered, supervised and regulated by the National Credit Union Administration. Originally chartered as a community credit union in 1938, credit union membership is open to all residents who live, work, worship or do business in Logan and Morgan County, Colorado, and their families.

....In the beginning the only services available were share/savings and loans. Early business was conducted by Treasurer Mr. Emmett Groce out of his home at 506 Lincoln St. The credit union’s first office was at the Sterling Co-Op Oil Company on South Third Street. Growth brought the credit union to its present-day location at 822 W. Main in July 1981.

....Everyone who joins the credit union becomes a member/owner. Once you’re a member, you are always a member, even if you move from the community.

....Membership includes the privilege to elect the volunteer board of directors who governs the credit union. Complementing the board is a team of 26 employees responsible for operations; 19 in Sterling and seven at the Fort Morgan Branch which opened in 1988.

....Over the years, services have expanded and today include a complete suite of financial products and services.

Along the way Sterling Federal Credit Union earned accolades that include: the first Federal community type charter credit union to attain 1 million in assets in 1954, recipient of the Sterling Journal Advocates Readers’ Choice Award, Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Award from Credit Union National Association, and consistently ranked highly among its peer group of credit unions and federal examiners.

How To Deal With ‘Shrink’

Shoplifting and employee theft are rising; they make up what retailers call "shrink." Loss prevention is a broad category used to encompass disappearing merchandise from shoplifting customers and employees not ringing up merch correctly, not checking invoices to packing lists, and giving their employee discounts to friends and family, plus transfers that are sent to another store but never taken out of the original store's inventory.

Employers Concerned About Regulations

While Colorado employers’ biggest concerns revolve around the increasing regulations on their operations, the shortage of available workers ranks a solid second, according to results of a survey that come as the state government attempts to deal with similar labor issues. Eleven percent of companies identified the worker shortage as their most important issue in a survey done in June and July for the Colorado Chamber of Commerce by national research firm Cole Hargrave Snodgrass & Associates. That’s significantly lower than the 27% of respondents that pegged the issue of too few workers as their top concern last year, but it is still a significant challenge — and is particularly acute for employers operating primarily in the Denver area, the survey found. According to state figures, Colorado has more than two job openings for every unemployed resident of the state. Businesses have had to limit operating hours, pause expansions and take other steps that have cut into their productivity as they have dealt for several years now with this worker shortage.

Finalists Named For 'Coolest Thing'

The Colorado Chamber of Commerce has announced the top 10 finalists for its second annual Coolest Thing Made in Colorado competition.“We’re honored to highlight the wide diversity of products made right here in Colorado through our Coolest Thing Made in Colorado program,” said Colorado Chamber President and CEO Loren Furman. “Our impressive finalists truly represent the state’s dynamic manufacturing industry, which is vital to the fabric of our local communities. We look forward to celebrating all of the top 10 finalists at our awards ceremony next month.” The finalists were chosen by an independent selection committee who reviewed and assessed each nomination. They will be honored at the Colorado Chamber’s Annual Meeting Luncheon on October 19, 2023, where the Coolest Thing winner and runner-up will be announced. The Chamber will also announce special categories of winners, including a “People’s Choice” award based on an online voting tool that will launch in the coming weeks.

There has be several epic moments in space this past year, from the successful Artemis 1mission to India becoming the fourth country to successfully land on the Moon to historic international collaboration on display in achieving the ambitious DART mission. 2023 continued the transition from the government to the private sector in driving activity in space. According to the most recent Space Foundation Report, commercial industry accounts for 78% of the economic activity in the space domain that is generating over $540 billion. There is tremendous demand to manufacture and deploy satellites into orbit, explore the lunar surface, and put infrastructure in place to enable operations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and cislunar space that will lay the foundation for further commercial activity.

Fundraiser To Help

Foster Children

The Sterling Elks Lodge is raising awareness and funds for Logan County's children in foster care on Sat., Oct 7 from 5 -8 p.m.. There will be chili, cinnamon rolls, music, and a silent auction. All funds raised will be placed into the Step Out for Kids Program led by the Resource Unit of Logan County's Department of Human Services. Leading up the the chili supper, be on the look out for posts of donations that will be placed in the silent auction. Tickets cost $6 per person and can be purchased at the door.
