Theater Talk
with hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel

James Russo, Ethel Merman, Bob Levitt Jr., & Tony Cointreau We welcome author Tony Cointreau and philanthropist Jim Russo, who were, for a quarter of a century, the best friends of Ethel Merman. The duo recalls fun times they spent with Merman, ranging from dinners at Sardi's to trips to the flea market. They also share memories of being with her during tragic times, including the aftermath of the heartbreaking untimely death of her daughter, Ethel Jr., the sad breakup of Merman's marriage, and finally, the battle with brain cancer that killed her in 1984.

Cointreau and Russo also show us some of the mementos and treasures that Merman left them, including her amazing personal notebook, filled with day to day observations about her life and career, as well as her favorite recipes.

Mozart in Vienna

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart On the 16th of March, 1781 at 9 0'clock in the morning the 25 year old Mozart arrives in Vienna. The last ten years of his life will be spent in this city. In this period he writes such masterpieces as the Magic Flute, his most important symphonies and the Requiem. Here is where he reaches the limits of his popularity. "Believe me ... fame doesn't last very long here ... after only a few months the Viennese already want something new," wrote Mozart to his father. Mozart in Vienna traces in 60 minutes the most critical years of his life. Examining Vienna's authentic Mozart sites such as the Mozart House at Domgasse 5 ("Figaro-Haus"), the Theater an der Wien and the Stefansdom helps put into focus Mozart's special connection to the city and the Viennese relationship to Mozart.
