For over two decades, Lynne Hagmeier, Designer for Kansas Troubles Quilters, has

drawn inspiration for her fabric and quilt designs from the view outside her studio

Her husband is a bird nurturer and in turn the birds treat them to regular visits throughout the seasons. Bluebirds Nest is her latest collection.

Bluebird Quartet Kit - Make It Mini #9

This lovely 30” square tabletopper showcases the Bluebirds Nest collection beautifully with the checkboard centre surrounded by a quartet of pieced bluebirds. Berries the birds are carrying can be appliqued or embroidered for a finishing touch!

and binding.

Bluebirds Nest Kit - Make It Mini #5

The Make It Mini #5 was introduced and a quick favourite with the Blackbird’s Nest

collection. It is equally stunning in the Bluebirds Nest collection and is so enjoyable to create using a combination of piecing and applique techniques.

Kit includes pattern with applique templates and full instructions, all fabric for top and binding. Backing is not included.

And now for a slight diversion down memory lane .....

Bluebirds, window watching, nurturing …. These words triggered my memory of a lovely song from my early childhood “There’s a Bluebird on Your Windowsill”. When I set out to find more of the lyrics, what I found was even more interesting -- the song was written in 1947 by a Canadian woman who was a nurse at what was then the Hospital for Sick and Crippled Children (now the Children’s Hospital) in Vancouver. It was the first song by a Canadian to sell more than one million copies, born out of simple beautiful moment in the life of an ailing child. My mother’s favourite singer, father of Canadian country music, Wilf Carter, released his version in 1949 and as a preschooler I was introduced to this song, played on a portable record player on the kitchen table in our farmhouse! Find the lyrics and more information from the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame here.

Let the beautiful blues and creams of Bluebird’s Nest inspire you to create a quilt that celebrates the wonders of nature, and will provide comfort and nurturing to its owner.

From your beloved Editor ...

Has anyone noticed the new illuminated sign in the window at the shop? I will be seriously offended if you haven't! It was engineered by me with help from our son Kirk, and T-Murph made the wooden enclosure and did the rest of the window dressing. I think it is safe to say the result is world-class, maybe even epic! Next time you visit the shop take a minute to bask in its awesome radiance.

I hope everyone who attended Demo Days last week enjoyed themselves. I was planning to demonstrate my new battery powered, handheld Dewalt vacuum cleaner but Norine said it wasn't that kind of demo. Apparently you quilters never make a mess!
