The Port of Lake Charles recently was awarded a $10 million grant through the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, or TIGER Grant Program. The grant will expand the Port's Bulk Terminal, creating 1,500 construction jobs and 200 permanent jobs at the Port. 

 

The Department of Energy gave final approval for an export license for Sempra's Cameron LNG facility in Hackberry, La. Construction of the facility, which will employ 3,000 people, can begin immediately.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission and Human Services Department of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury are holding Informational meetings throughout September at the Business and Career Solutions Center on 2424 Third Street in Lake Charles. The purpose of the meetings is to offer individuals training in industrial crafts, gas and oil, shipbuilding and other occupations in demand. Residents that fall into the following categories are invited to attend: long term unemployed (27 weeks or more), recently separated veterans, and individuals most likely to exhaust Unemployment Insurance benefits. Fort Polk's Commanding General, BG Hickman, will be hosting a social encompassing the tactical insertion (Jump) on the evening of September 17. Relay for Life is answering the calls for a t-shirt.  They have partnered with Houndstooth t-shirt company to offer a team fund-raising opportunity to our volunteers this fall.  No checks or cash will be collected or received by the American Cancer Society or Relay For Life staff.   You must have an order of 25 shirts or more and there are very specific dates / windows to place an order: September 15-20, October 15-20, and November 15-20. The locally owned Lake Charles CW TV Station is searching for a talented individual to be the first host of the Lake Charles CW.  Auditions will be held on Saturday September 20, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Lake Charles CW Studio located at 129 W. Prien Lake Rd. Participants must be 18 or older to participate and must register via the Lake Charles CW Facebook page and upload  their head-shot.   Participants will be contacted via email with additional details and documents needed for the audition.    Each contestant registered via Facebook will be assigned a time between 12 p.m. to 3pm for their audition. The five (5) semifinalists will be subject to a voting period by the public from Sept 23 through Sept 30.   The Lake Charles CW TV host will be announced on October 6th during primetime programming.

 

Midnight Fantasies Lakefront Tour Car, Truck and Bike Show is revving up for its 23rd event, which will be held Sept. 20-21 at the Burton Coliseum, 7001 Gulf Highway, Lake Charles. The show will feature hundreds of vehicles, ranging from the 1920s until now. New this year is the Tin Can Tourist Antique RV and Camper Show, as well as Auto Xpressions Car Crush, the Pumpelly Tire Burnout Competition, Dyno on the Go -- Dyno Your Ride, and Mac Tire & Wheel Truck Pulls. There will also be a flea market corral with more than vendors, food booths, a pizza eating contest, a tug-of-war competition, music and fun jumps and train rides for the children. Gallery Promenade, the Arts Council of SWLA's annual gallery and museum showcase, returns on Friday, September 26, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and this year, dozens of galleries and art spaces, from downtown Lake Charles to McNeese campus and Sulphur to Moss Bluff, will open their doors for an extensive and cooperative art walk that features the area's current exhibits and local artists. While its sister event, the Spring Art Walk, focuses on the individual artist, Gallery Promenade draws residents and visitors into galleries and museums to help boost the public's awareness of the businesses that work daily to promote the local art scene. Gallery Promenade is a celebratory event that encourages the public to travel from gallery to gallery for a comprehensive and interactive experience of the diversity of Southwest Louisiana's art and the many artists and art spaces that are further developing the region's cultural economy. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a division of Family & Youth Counseling Agency Inc. will host volunteer training beginning Saturday, October 4, 2013, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Family & Youth, 220 Louie Street, Lake Charles. Training will continue on Oct. 11, 18, and 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each day. Every child deserves a safe permanent home. Be the voice that helps them find one. A Court Appointed Special Advocate is a trained volunteer child advocate who is appointed by a Family Court Judge to speak for the best interests of abused and neglected children. It's a way for individuals in the community to make a difference in the life of an abused child.  The first step in making a difference is the desire to do so. Ed and Susan Poole of Hollywood on the Bayou will be presenting a fun and informative seminar on Louisiana film history on Saturday, October 11, as part of the 3rd Annual Lake Charles Film & Music Festival (Oct 10-12), which is an event made up of independent film screenings, live music, seminars, workshops and parties in downtown Lake Charles. The seminar will include an exclusive seven minute documentary on Vitascope Hall, which was the first movie theater in the U.S., making Louisiana the "birthplace of the movie theater!"  The seminar will also include rare film trailers, posters, trivia, and some humorous stories about what went on during the production of some of these great Louisiana films. The Southwest Louisiana Sportsmen for the Hungry organization, in affiliation with Hunters for the Hungry, will host their annual food collection drive on Sunday, October 19, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Gordon's Drug Store parking lot, located at 2716 Lake Street in Lake Charles.  Area residents are asked to clean out their freezers and pantries and donated items to Abraham's Tent.  Needed food items include: wrapped and labeled frozen meat and fish (wild and domestic), canned and boxed foods, rice, cooking oil, seasonings, vegetables and paper goods.  A convenient drive-thru drop off service will be offered. All collected food will be directly donated to Abraham's Tent, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing food for the poor and hungry in our community every day of the year.  For more information, contact event organizers Sally Foret at (337) 433-7090 or George Paret at (337) 477-6773.

More than 3,000 residents are expected to take steps to improve their heart health Saturday, November 1 when they participate in the 2014 SWLA Heart Walk at McNeese State University. The annual event, which raises funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America's No. 1 and No. 4 killers, begins at 8a.m. CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital serves as the local My Heart. My Life. sponsor with a $25,000 sponsorship to support this event in SWLA. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. The 2014 SWLA Heart Walk has a special area for children so the public is encouraged to bring the entire family.
