The day that could improve your whole year.
Whether you’re a grown up looking to participate in our new Adult Learning format, or a family that wants to learn about our Children & Youth ministries, this Sunday, September 19 is the day to circle on your calendar.
All three of these ministries will be hosting events from 10 am to 11 am (between the 9 am and 11:15 am services) to introduce you to everything they have to offer.

|
The Big Small-Groups Showcase for Adults will be in Valentine Hall (with the windows open for ventilation) and will introduce you to the new format we’ll be using for Adult Learning this year.
|
|
The Sunday School Open House for Children will be in:
- The Children’s Chapel (three & four-year-olds)
- Room 202 in Michaux House (K & 1st grade),

- Room 210 in Michaux House.(4th & 5th grades)
|
|
The Youth Fall Kick Off will be in the Memorial Garden, unless there’s heavy rain, in which case we’ll send you a video.
|
|
All of our programs have been imagined and created with tremendous care and creativity, not to mention a deep devotion to the spiritual growth of everyone involved.
Come see how this new program year can be a transforming experience for you....

A new Outdoor Service
Starting this Sunday, there’s a new outdoor service at 11:30 in the Memorial Garden. Short and sweet, this service will feel a lot like the intimate Communion in the Garden services we held on Wednesday evenings in the summer. The service includes communion and a short homily, plus the readings. Looking forward to seeing you under the Crepe Myrtles.

John's Welcome Sunday Sermon
There were some audio problems during the livestream of John’s powerful and thoughtful sermon last Sunday, so we’re including the text of it here.

It’s time to open the other front door of the church.
It’s often said that a church’s website is its front door to the world. We prefer to think that it’s our other front door. In either case, our new website opens up so much about who we are, how we worship, and how to become a doer.
Here are some features you might want to check out:
- The Daily Bread, which is on the home page, is a single thought designed to inspire you, educate you, intrigue you or entertain you. It appears every weekday--and once it’s gone, it’s gone, so stop by every day for a quick verbal pick-me-up.
- At the bottom of the home page is our news section, which (like the eChimes) alerts you to what’s going on at St. James’s right now.
|
|
- The calendar can be viewed as a monthly grid or a list, and you can organize it by day, week or month.
- We’ll be producing and posting more videos, so keep your eye open for new video content--especially on Video Thursdays.
Of course, there’s lots of other content, created for both newcomers and long-time parishioners.
As we’ve said before, we’re still working out some kinks. But overall, the site should be the first place you go when you want to know what’s happening here at St. James’s.

All aboard the Wheels Ministry.
This is one of the easiest and most satisfying ministries available to St. James’s’ members. You provide transportation on Sunday mornings to gracious and grateful Westminster Canterbury residents who attend the 11:15 am worship service.
Training for driving the WCR van is provided. Our goal is to engage 8 to 10 drivers so each Wheels Ministry member only has to drive once every two months.
Open your heart, then open the doors of the church to people who otherwise can’t get here.
If you are interested in volunteering and/or leading the team, please contact Mary Brown at [email protected].

THIS WEDNESDAY: Arts & Theology
Our Wednesday Night Adult Learning Program begins in earnest this Wednesday with Arts & Theology, a multi-week series that looks at (and listens to) the crucial role the arts play in Christian faith and religion. We’ll consider everything from the visual arts to poetry and music.
It all begins at 5:30 with Evening Prayer, followed by our study topic at 6 pm, then social time starting at 7. To eliminate travel time and to make it easier for people to participate from far away, the entire series will be on Zoom. We’re also super flexible. You’re invited to come for all or part of our evenings together.
You only have to register once for the entire year. Here's where you do it. You only have to register once for the entire Wednesday series.

A different kind of service at
a brand new time.
Our Fall worship schedule now includes a 5 pm service that’s different from anything we’ve ever offered. More casual. More intimate. More modern. And focused on music that’s acoustic and contemporary.
Some people refer to this kind of service as “Ancient Future Worship” because it combines the intimate and personal qualities of original Christian services with more modern touches. Over time, we hope to include an opportunity to gather around a table for food together after the service. For now, there are refreshments after the service.
In the meantime, consider the delights of a late afternoon service where we make a different kind of joyous noise in a more informal atmosphere!

Only their voices are small.
Their impact is amazing.
The Cherub Choir and the Children’s Choir are off to a great start. What we lack in size we more than make up for in spirit and talent.
There is still time for children pre-K through 5th grade to join us. Reach out to Mark at [email protected]

Be ready to be an Acolyte when we’re ready to have Acolytes again.
Becoming an acolyte is a great way to serve others, grow in your faith, and learn leadership skills within The Episcopal Church. We are so grateful to all our acolytes for serving in this important ministry. And we welcome any 6th-12th grader who is interested in being trained to becoming an acolyte.
Even though we’ve suspended the Acolyte Ministry for the time being, now is a great time to train new and current acolytes. So sign up now and let us know you’re interested.

It’s time to register for Confirmation 2021-22.
The clergy and Youth Ministry are honored and excited to walk with youth through your confirmation preparation process. At St. James’s we like to think of Confirmation as “base camp” on your spiritual journey. It’s neither your point of origin, nor your destination, but a place to rest, grow, and be equipped for your spiritual journey.
Registration for our youth confirmation process is now open for the 2021-2022 program year. Students beginning in 9th grade are eligible to participate accompanied by at least one parent. If 9th grade doesn’t feel like a good fit, you’re welcome to come back any time later in high school.
For more information about Youth Confirmation at St. James’s, please contact our director of youth ministry Mary Beth Abplanalp ([email protected])

Support St. James’s without it costing you a penny.
There’s an easy way to support St. James’s while you’re doing something else. When you're shopping on Amazon (which is probably often these days) go to smile.amazon.com, instead. Once you’re there, designate St. James’s as the program you’re supporting, then a percentage of every purchase you make on Amazon Smile will go the church. Easy-peezy.
