Join the Chamber at Margaret's Cafe!
Don't forget to join the Chamber as it kicks off another season of First Fridays, tonight at Margaret's Cafe , located at 805 North 5th Street in Toronto. Margaret's will be offering appetizer and drink specials, in addition to their famous fish. Started in 2017, First Fridays are a fun way to promote our local eating and drinking establishments. There's no program, no speaker, no charge and no need to RSVP. More details are below. So gather up friends, co-workers, and family members and we'll see you after work!

Due to the popularity of the annual Coffee & Connections at the Jefferson County Farm Bureau offices, reservations are required. Online reservations and payments are not available at this time due to software changes taking place at the Chamber offices. You may pay at the door or be invoiced but a reservation must be made in advance.

On Tuesday, April 9th, a Medical Marijuana Community Awareness Forum will be held, sponsored by Ohio Valley Natural Relief LLC (OVNR) , at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School, located at 1509 County Highway 22 A in Bloomingdale. Admission is free.

OVNR is excited to get the conversation going and give specific details about how to obtain an Ohio Medical Marijuana card. They are the area's only locally owned and operated medical marijuana dispensary, and they look forward to educating the local community.

Discovery Jewelers will be hosting a One Day Estate Sale on Tuesday, April 9th, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
   
All items are for sale, including several celebrity items. All items must be paid that day. No layaways, but financing will be available. This is not Discovery's merchandise, so it will not be available for preview, and it will be gone after April 9th.

Appetizers and refreshments will be served. The amount of merchandise completely fills their main cases and is well worth the trip to view.

On Saturday, April 6th, A Caring Place Child Advocacy Center will host a Casino Night fundraiser at St. Florian Event Center in Wintersville from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Higher Shipping Costs Coming as Transportation Budget Compromise Includes Huge Diesel Tax Increase

After nearly a week of contentious, on-again, off-again negotiations, Gov. Mike DeWine and House and Senate leaders agreed today to a compromise that bridges the differences between the governor’s original proposal and the House-passed and Senate-passed versions of the state transportation budget, House Bill 62. The compromise proposal will be voted on later today by the full House and Senate.

Though there were numerous policy differences between the different versions of HB 62, the primary sticking point was how much to increase the gasoline and diesel fuel tax rates. Both are currently at 28 cents and were last raised in 2005. The agreement will result in a gas tax increase of 10.5 cents, bringing the total tax to 38.5 cents, and a diesel tax increase of 19 cents, bringing the total tax on diesel to 47 cents. Both increases will become effective on July 1, 2019.

President Trump again raised the possibility of closing the U.S. border with Mexico in response to the growing surge of migrants arriving from Central America. The President’s frustration over the current situation along our southern land border is shared by many, including federal officials who have declared the U.S. government’s ability to deal with the influx of migrants to be at a breaking point.

It’s a key reason why the U.S. Chamber continues to call on Congress and the administration to find a common sense solution on immigration that would pair increased resources for our nation’s border security efforts with protections and legal status for Dreamers – young men and women brought to the U.S. as children through no fault of their own – and long-term Temporary Protected Status beneficiaries. We also recently outlined steps the U.S. government could take to address the crisis at its origin in the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

- April 5, 1859 -

From History.com: Naturalist Charles Darwin sends his publishers the first three chapters of Origin of Species , which will become one of the most influential books ever published.

Knowing the fates of scientists who had published radical theories and been ostracized or worse, Darwin held off publishing his theory of natural selection for years. He secretly developed his theory during two decades of surreptitious research following his return from a five-year voyage to South America on the HMS Beagle as the ship’s unpaid botanist.

Darwin, the privileged and well-connected son of a successful English doctor, had been interested in botany and natural sciences since his boyhood, despite the discouragement of his early teachers. At Cambridge, he found professors and scientists with similar interests and with their help began participating in scientific voyages, including the HMS Beagle’s trip. By the time Darwin returned, he had developed an outstanding reputation as a field researcher and scientific writer, based on his many papers and letters dispatched from South America and the Galapagos Islands, which were read at meetings of prominent scientific societies in London.

Darwin began publishing studies of zoology and geology as soon as he returned from his voyage, while secretly working on his radical theory of evolution. Meanwhile, he married and had seven children. He finally published The Origin of Species after another scientist began publishing papers with similar ideas. When the book appeared in November 1859, it sold out immediately. By 1872, six editions had been published. It laid the groundwork for modern botany, cellular biology, and genetics. Darwin died in 1882.
