This Sun, Sep 22: MK Nelson preaches
MK Nelson returns to preach this Sunday. She'll continue our series on the 10 Buddhist ox-herding pictures, speaking about picture three (perceiving the ox). Our readings will include the Gospel of Thomas (Logion 2) and quotes from the Budda. ("Before enlightenment; chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment; chop wood, carry water.")
Rev. Polly's Sep 15 sermon
On Sun, Sep 15, Polly Moore preached "Footprints," the second sermon in our series on the ox-herding pictures. She began: "This morning we’re going to talk about the second ox-herding picture, called 'Finding the Footprints.' But before we do that, I want to back up a little and set the stage again. Specifically, I want to address the question of why it makes sense to put up a series of thousand-year-old Buddhist pictures on the wall of a Christian church." Read her sermon.
Climate strike this Fri, Sep 20
John Latham invites members of the church to join him at the Climate Strike in Palo Alto on Fri, Sep 20. It's a global event, whose organizers write: "days before the UN Climate Summit, young people and adults will strike all across the US and world to demand transformative action be taken to address the climate crisis. Millions of us will take to the streets to demand a right to a future." The Palo Alto event starts at 6 pm at the Palo Alto City Hall. John invites you to gather at the church at 3 pm to make signs.
Preschool fundraiser Sat, Oct 5
Our partners at The Right Approach Preschool will be holding a fundraising event at the church on Sat, Oct 5 from 10:30–noon. They write: "Join us for a win-win fundraiser event and enjoy an exclusive sneak preview of our beautiful preschool site! Your purchase of Usborne books provides us with materials for our school library, and their Cards for a Cause program gives back 43% of all proceeds. Also enter into a raffle to win free tutoring sessions, and more." RSVP here.
