MEDIEVAL WOMEN’S CHOIR CONCERT – VISIONS & MIRACLES, Saturday, June 8 at 8:00pm. Visions and miracles play a fundamental role in the foundational narratives and sacred texts of Christianity. No wonder, then, that medieval Christians experienced the world in the same way: celebrating, inventing, narrating, and preserving a dizzying array of visions and miracles. This is a reflection of their intense spirituality and their casual acceptance of the role of the supernatural in daily life. Accounts of miracles and visions permeated the music of the era, often pushing singers to create their most expressive works. Join the Medieval Women’s Choir as they explore the musical mysticism of the Middle Ages. Information, https://medievalwomenschoir.org/events/.

WELCOME BACKPACKS Did you know that know that individuals seeking asylum in the United States must wait 150 days after filing their asylum application before they can request employment authorization (a work permit)? Add in the time it takes to find legal assistance to prepare the asylum application – asylum seekers are often waiting a very long period before they can move forward in establishing themselves in a new community. The St. James Respite Team connects newcomers to legal and other community resources, while offering small forms of direct assistance. A couple recently came to St. James and were assessed for our ESL tutoring program. Their children remain with relatives in Latin America; legal assistance is imperative to their need to financially support now, and eventually reunite with, their children. In addition to sharing legal resources, the Respite Team connected the mother to a free eye clinic for an exam and glasses, and walked them to St. Francis House to select free clothing and household items. The couple was incredibly grateful for the gift cards shared by the Respite Team so that they could purchase groceries and other essential items. Thank you for helping us extend a warm welcome to our new neighbors! As Welcome Backpack supplies are low, please consider purchasing gift cards or items from our Target registry: https://www.target.com/gift-registry/gift/sjia-welcome-backpacks.
