**Special notice about parking 11/20**

On Sunday, November 20, the parking garage at the Cabrini Medical Tower will be closed and unavailable for parking for St. James Mass attendees. However, we have arranged for free parking at the Marion and Minor Garage directly across Boren Avenue from Cabrini Garage. There will be signage directing you to the entrance. One thing to note, when walking to the Cathedral, you will need to exit the garage via a car ramp as the entrance to the office building above will be closed.

Ditty Bags for Seafarers--donations needed!

This year, the Cathedral community is invited to collect items to be given to seafarers who dock in the Port of Seattle. Our goal is to donate 100 ditty bags to be distributed during the holidays.

Ditty bags are receptacles for odds and ends. The Seattle Seafarers’ Center provides about 1,000 of these to merchant seafarers with bags full of all kinds of basic necessities each year. It is an important part of the pastoral welcome and care for seafarers who are berthed during the holidays. It is a wonderful way to give thanks for these often hidden essential workers, who come from all over the world and are far from their families.

What goes into a ditty bag? All bags will include the following:

  • an adult-sized knit hat
  • full size (please no travel size) bottle of shampoo and/or body wash
  • full size toothpaste
  • toothbrush
  • deodorant
  • shaving cream
  • 1-2 razors

Additional items can be included, such as:

  • candy or snacks (ex. individually wrapped chocolate, nuts, or trail mix)
  • deck of cards or other small games
  • notepad and pen/pencil
  • hand or body lotion
  • socks or gloves
  • something else special!

All donations can be left in the Cathedral Bookstore anytime between now and December 2. You can also have items shipped to the parish office (attention: Maria). Thank you! Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.

FATHER AUGUSTUS TOLTON: FROM SLAVE TO PRIEST Saturday, November 19 at 7:00pm at Pigott Auditorium on the Seattle University Campus. This engrossing one-man multi-media performance tells the story of Father Augustus Tolton, the first African American priest in the United States, who is now being considered for sainthood by the Vatican. From his dramatic escape from slavery to his courageous struggle in the face of prejudice, Tolton’s inspiring life centers around the message of reconciliation, hope and demonstrates Jesus’ all-encompassing love. The performance runs 75 minutes and is suitable for ages 10 and up. Sponsored by our neighbors at Immaculate Conception Church. Free-will offering.

CARE FOR CREATION Tip OF THE WEEK COP 27, the United Nations conference on Climate Change, began last weekend in Egypt. At this environmental summit, world leaders will consider how they have upheld pledges that were made at last year’s summit in Glasgow, including a “phase down” of the use of coal (one of the most polluting fossil fuels), to stop deforestation by 2030, to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, and to submit new climate action plans to the UN. Follow the proceedings at https://unfccc.int/cop27.

VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM The Cathedral’s Columbarium was blessed by Archbishop Etienne last December. A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open. Niches are available to parishioners who have been registered at least two years. Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284 or mlaughlin@stjames-cathedral.org.
