THANK YOU FROM ST VINCENT DE PAUL After living in her car for two months, a woman and her disabled son moved into an apartment. They settled into our neighborhood successfully having a supportive family member nearby and a new school the son loved. A problem arose when the woman discovered the agency that helped her get housed did not pay the move-in expenses as she believed they would. Although recently hired for a full-time job, she remained behind in her rent and waited for a first paycheck. The woman called the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449) requesting assistance. With your support, we were able to help this family with a portion of their rent and allow this family to feel secure in their new home. Information, Jo Ann Wiesner, 206-291-4012 or wiesnerjo@gmail.com.

Care for Creation tip of the week Last fall, the Washington State bishops called upon policy makers to develop a holistic plan to care for creation and the common good in the Lower Snake River region. (The letter is available at www.wacatholics.org.) 20 years ago, a study stated that Lower Snake River dams need to be breached in order to save the salmon population. More recent studies show that Chinook salmon will be extinct by 2030 without intervention. Senator Murray and Governor Inslee recommend that the services the dams now provide can be responsibly replaced, and must be breached in a timeframe needed by salmon and orca. The federal government has opened a public comment period, and Catholics are urged to join the public support for dam removal. Be sure to explain that you are a Catholic of St. James Cathedral, and because of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’, you are writing on the moral cause to breach the dams in order to save Snake River salmon from extinction and restore the river and abundant runs of salmon and steelhead. Comments can be made at https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2023/05/04/2023-09525/columbia-river-salmon-and-other-native-fish-request-for-information. We must keep faith and honor our commitments to tribal nations to protect and restore abundant salmon.

VISIT THE CATHEDRAL COLUMBARIUM A columbarium is a cemetery for the reverent burial of cremated remains. The way we honor the mortal remains of our deceased family members and friends is a reflection of the faith we profess in the Nicene Creed: we believe in the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. The columbarium is open for prayer whenever the Cathedral is open.
