Ministry Minute

Chewing Time
"A week later..."
-John 20:26

As most of you know I have this annoying habit. When we are past the day but still in the season I still say "Happy Easter!" Most of the congregation seems to have accepted it or at least they realize I have a microphone and they don't. Of course I still get quizzical looks from people who don't know the full on church side of me yet.

I love it because some of my favorite stories happen after Easter Sunday and before Pentecost. Jesus and Thomas which we read about last week. Jesus appearing on the road to Emmaus. Jesus eating a picnic on the beach with his Disciples there are so many sweet and wonderful stories in this season. And no wonder, Jesus was on the earth 40 days after his resurrection before he ascended to the right hand of the father. Then there was 10 days after that ascension until Pentecost for a total of 50.

This is such a rich time of discovery. One by one the disciples find bewilderment, loss, confusion, realization and ultimately purpose in Christ's resurrection. I use to wonder why Jesus didn't just stop by a quick en route to heaven, until I fed my son solid food for the first time. It is interesting, entertaining and bizarre to watch someone learn to chew. They do not like it at first, and that first face is priceless. It is funny not just because it is something that is simple to us, but also because you can tell that it is an instinct that they are discovering.

This is the resurrection. It takes time to embrace it, but it is an instinct, and Jesus is gracious enough to spend a season with us as we work it out.

Discussion Questions
  1. What spiritually have you come to believe only after time?
  2. What are you still chewing on?
  3. What are you still doing to celebrate Easter?

MESA OUTREACH -  Annual Soup Drive
It's time for our Annual Soup Drive to benefit those in need within our community.
For the past several years, we have been working with MESA Outreach, formerly Houston Northwest Community Center (HNwCC), to help provide support to families in need within the Bear Creek area.  On the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, the MESA Outreach food pantry distributes food to over 280 families. Through your generous support, last year we were able to help make that possible with the donation of over 1,000 of hearty soup!   Please help us continue this valuable assistance.  The collection drive will begin Sunday, April 8 and continue through May.   There are collection bags in the Narthex and donations can be placed in the Soup Can.
