February 26, 2021
Dear siblings in Christ,

This week has been one of rapid transition for so many aspects of our common life. I am personally excited for what these transitions can mean for Holy Cross. Before I go further, I need to thank our entire Bishop’s Committee for the incredible amount of work they have put in to making this move successful. Huge debts of gratitude are due to the Altar Guild and Godly Play ministers as well. Jack Cater too is once again doing so much to ensure our transition is as seamless as is possible in these times. This journey is not possible without all of you!

Wednesday morning of this week Jack Cater and I went to Oceanside Sanctuary to get keys and the lay of the land from their lead pastor Jason Coker, who I have worked closely with over the past couple of years on issues of social justice here in North County. Jason showed us our new office and guided us through where the necessary equipment can be hooked for live-streaming and our other administrative needs. At every step he exuded a hospitality and graciousness towards us and our needs. In other words, we were immediately allowed to feel that we were home.

That sense of home is one that I have been able to transfer throughout my own life. “Home is where the heart is,” for me means that home has been a lot of places, from the Midwest, to South Africa, to New Jersey/New York, to the Bay Area, and now Southern California. Holy Cross, too, has made home of a lot of places. The Cater's, Sebastian's, and Collier's know this far better than I. Holy Cross is a thirty-four-year-old congregation from our start in 1986. We must remember that the people of Israel wandered the desert with Moses for forty years after the Exodus through the Red Sea. Holy Cross’s journey did not start this past Sunday with the deconsecration of the Gateway Building by Bishop Susan. It began when the Spirit moved for a new community to begin in North County.

That journey continues, we are a pilgrim people. And now we get to try a new place for a time. We will be settling in for a few weeks before we begin to assemble our more fulsome process for our longer-term placement. At a minimum, we should thank God for the gift of Oceanside Sanctuary’s hospitality and embrace of us. “Open Minds, Open Arms” will allow us to embrace them right back, and may God bless us as siblings in faith, hope, and the Holy Spirit.

Blessings,

Richard+
Our New "Campsite" Temporary Home
We are pleased to announce that Holy Cross will be space sharing with Oceanside Sanctuary as we explore longer-term solutions for our own facility needs and discern God’s ever transformative call on this community.

We are deeply grateful for the leadership of Oceanside Sanctuary’s hospitality, particularly lead pastor Jason Coker, and look forward to having a short term solution for our administrative and worship - livestreaming and possibly in-person - ministry needs. Additionally, we are excited about the possibilities of reigniting some of our outreach ministries that have lain fallow during the pandemic. Holy Cross’s new Lenten journey is one filled with hope and possibility as we can now freely contemplate a true Spirit-led future!

Once we have settled in over the next few weeks, we will begin the next steps in our revisioning and relocating process.

Oceanside Sanctuary is located at 204 S. Freeman St in Oceanside. We invite you to get to know our new faith partners by exploring their website, here, and their Facebook page, here. You will find we have much in common in terms of values, mission, and ministry.

Lenten Study
Entering the Passion of Jesus

During Lent we will be considering the risks that Jesus took on his journey to Jerusalem. We will base the discussions mainly on a book by Amy-Jill Levine, Entering the Passion of Jesus. Dr. Levine is a practicing Jew and the New Testament professor at Vanderbilt Divinity School. She brings a great understanding of the Jewish implications of the Gospels.

This Sunday - Jerusalem: Risking Reputation - the risk of entering the city and what it means to each of us. Please see the questions to consider and the parallel Gospel passages of Palm Sunday here.
