April 9, 2021
Dear siblings in Christ Jesus,

I want to thank you all for your persistent prayers and presence in this Easter season. We are through Holy Week and now on to the fifty days of Easter and all the hope, joy, awe, wonder, and mystery they still hold for us. Forty days of Lent seem like a lot, certainly, but how much more glory is there in the fifty days of Eastertide? It actually follows the same pattern of Jewish festivals. We call the fiftieth day Pentecost and celebrate the bestowing of the Holy Spirit upon the church as the body of Christ. Our Jewish siblings celebrate the fiftieth day after Passover as Shavuot, prayers are said to thank God for the five books of Moses (the Torah) and for God’s covenant. Synagogues are decorated with flowers and plants on this joyous occasion to remember the flowers of Mount Sinai. We Christians decorate with red to celebrate the tongues of flame that descended upon the disciples.

But, we are a long way from there. There are many days to dawn and turn to dusk before we get to that next glorious feast of the church. In the meantime, we walk the Easter journey with the disciples. We know the goodness that comes from Christ’s message and resurrection to the world on this side of history. That first Easter was one of terror, fear, and grief for the disciples. They are confused, disoriented, bewildered, saddened, and filled with self-doubt and disbelief. And we too, whenever we experience the unfathomable, the unknowable, the mystery, cower at first. It is only over time, as we begin to reflect on the deeds of God in our lives that we come to see the truth: that God has always been there, gently nudging us towards new perspective, a widened horizon of possibility for ourselves and the world we live in. God is nudging us towards a new vision, and it is slowly revealed to us over these fifty days, and then we’ll know it more fully on Pentecost.

In the meantime, enjoy the bewildering journey that is Easter. Yes, it may be a long season, but it is one for gestating and nurturing something new and wonderful in our lives. Blessings on your Eastertide, Holy Cross and friends. Blessings on you that God may reveal to you that new source of life, and that you might see anew with Easter eyes all that God is doing in the world around us.

In the hope of Easter,

Richard+

Thank you to all participated in our Holy Week services. From the Passion on Palm Sunday to our first Alleluia's on Easter Sunday, our Holy Week journey would not have been possible without you!

Below are a few pictures from this past week. A special thank you to Jack Cater for his many evenings of behind the camera, working the sound equipment and managing various platforms on the web from the laptops (it's quite a setup!) to make our livestreams happen! And to Jack, Rev Richard, and Andrew Seegers, friend of Holy Cross and tech consultant, for their time and efforts on troubleshooting our video and audio livestream problems.
Jack Cater and Andrew Seegers - well... what do you think the problem might be?
Maybe this one? Just kidding - the tech masters knew what they were doing!!

Parish Staff and Volunteers taking a little "down" time
the week following Easter

In order to rejuvenate and re-energize following all of the activity leading up to and through Easter Sunday, parish staff and volunteers are taking some time off:

  • Rev Richard, Jack - tech guru extraordinaire, our readers and altar guild are enjoying "sitting in the pews" this Sunday as we join Church Anew and St. Andrew's Lutheran in Eden Prairie, Minnesota for worship - see below.
  • Karen - Senior Warden, is out-of-town returning the evening of Wednesday, April 14th. Please contact Katie Ho, Jr Warden, or Rev. Richard in her absence.

Worship this Sunday, April 11th
Second Sunday of Easter
9 AM
The service will be video livestreamed
(No Drive-In/In-person Church at this time)

PLEASE NOTE: This Sunday, your priest and tech wizard will be putting up their feet to enjoy a service with you all! We will be joining with Church Anew and St. Andrew's Lutheran in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, for a joy filled liturgy very similar to that of our own in the Episcopal Church and great music you'll likely know. Church Anew is an ecumenical ministry dedicated to equipping church leaders to face the adaptive changes needed for ministry today and tomorrow and is a ministry of St. Andrew's Lutheran. As many of you know, the Episcopal and Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are in full communion with one another. A PDF version of the service booklet is here.
Miss the Holy Week services? You may watch them below (please note, the Palm Sunday service has audio issues and we have provided a link to the audio recording of Rev Richard's sermon as well). Also, as a reminder, Holy Monday and Tuesday were Evening Prayer services via Zoom and there is no recording:

In the Diocese and Beyond
If you’re looking to get away as an individual, a couple, or a family Camp Steven's would love to be a place for you to retreat this spring. Until they can host large groups again, this is the best way for them to sustain camp and share their mission. Rooms and cabins range in size and style but always include private restrooms and sleeping areas. Meals are cooked from scratch and with lots of love from local organic ingredients and served outdoors. There are 256 acres to relax, explore, breathe deep, and getaway. Take things at your own pace with a retreat weekend, or choose a monthly Family Camp for a full slate of activities for all ages. View options at campstevens.org/visit-us or email Sam at [email protected] or call/text her at 760-896-7113.
Camp Stevens has been given the go-ahead by the state to open resident camps this summer!

If you're hoping to register for camp, now is the time. Sessions are filling up quickly, and several camp options (Phoenix Hill Sessions 1 and 3) are completely full and on a waitlist. The earlier you register or sign up for a waitlist, the easier it is for them to adjust plans, hire the appropriate number of staff, and make room for waitlisted campers.

Register today at www.campstevens.org/summer!

Your questions, priorities, and concerns are an important part of their planning process. CS Camp Family Zooms are being held on the first Wednesday of each month (May 5, and June 2) at 5:30 PM PST.
