Vancouver, BC - February 11th, 2012 GayWhistler's WinterPRIDE hosted the fourth annual Mr. Gay Canada competition February 9-11, 2012. Five contestants competed in the three day challenge to determine who would be the nation's representative in the prestigious Mr. Gay World competition in Johannesburg, South Africa this April. Thomas Egli was selected as the best candidate by the panel of judges and crowned Mr. Gay Canada 2012.
Mr. Gay Canada 2012 is far from ordinary. Thomas leads an exciting life as part international tour leader and part ecologist. Thomas has traveled extensively to spread the message of cultural understanding and environmental sustainability. This Vancouver based entrepreneur owns a research diving company where he introduces visitors to West Coast wildlife. As an educator with National Geographic Thomas takes youth on expeditions to remote parts of the world and teaches them about photography and conservation, two of his passions. He also helps teach LGBT youth that being gay is not about stereotypes, but about self expression.
Thomas Egli released the following statement, "This journey has been exceptional and exciting. The weeks leading up to this competition and the events themselves have taught me much about myself and I have grown much more than I could have expected. I am honoured to serve as a much-needed positive role model for LGBT youth in Canada and around the world. Popular media and gay culture bombard us with stereotypes which can be confusing for people who are just coming out. I want to increase awareness of the true diversity of the LGBT community. I also want to promote healthy lifestyles in the gay community. I am thankful for all of the support I've received from family and friends, new and old. The next exciting step is to prepare for the upcoming event in South Africa , where I will proudly represent Canada."
The 2012 Mr. Gay Canada competition included a swim suit appearance, mini fashion show, sports challenge, panel interviews, and presentation skills. OUTtv was on hand capturing the exciting challenge and will air the documentary television show later this Spring 2012.
Ken Coolen, Co-Executive Producer of Mr. Gay Canada said, "All five delegates are incredible role models for Canada's LGBT community and worthy of being Mr. Gay Canada. The Judging panel was especially impressed by Thomas' maturity and leadership. They are confident in his ability to represent Canada's LGBT community to the world."
