Thomas Jefferson School

December 2025

To Our Thomas Jefferson School Families,

December was a brief but eventful month! We had three very fast weeks of instruction and learning. Students participated in various activities that helped build their knowledge, social skills, and sense of community.

ChromeBooks - We have noticed an increase in students arriving at school with uncharged ChromeBooks.  This is an essential element of being prepared to learn in class, as modern education has a significant digital component. While we have the capacity to charge students’ devices, we do not have enough loaners to provide while this occurs. Often, this means the student cannot participate in the lesson. Please work with your child(ren) to develop a home routine for charging devices so they are ready to learn!

The Winter Concerts were a huge success! We were all so impressed with the students' talent, dedication, and collective performance. Mrs. Love and Mr. Bova once again did an excellent job teaching and supporting our students, and they made the performances come together seamlessly. It was also wonderful to see many of Mrs. Love’s former students come to perform a song and support her in her last concert!

As many of you know, Mrs. Love will retire at the end of December. We wish her the very best in retirement and extend a heartfelt thank you for her many years of service and dedication to our students! Mr. Bova will take over Mrs. Love’s role as Teacher of Instrumental Music as soon as his replacement begins in our school district. The Board of Education approved Ms. Noreen Abed-Rabbo at the last meeting and will begin her role as General Music Teacher in our district as quickly as possible.

The Morris Hills Regional School District came in to present to our 8th-grade students twice regarding course offerings. Both the Business Department highlighted elective opportunities and the Guidance Department reviewed the course selection process. There will be 8th Grade Parent nights in January for Morris Hills and Morris Knolls High Schools. The dates can be found below under “Upcoming Events.”

A special thank you goes out to our professionals who were recognized for this school year:

  • Thomas Jefferson honored the Educator of the Year and the Educational Services Person of the Year for the Governor’s Awards

  • Educator of the Year - Special Education Teacher, Mrs. Toni Zangara
  • Educational Services Person of the Year- Reading Specialist, Mrs. Jenny Marsh

Upcoming Events

  • Winter Break - There will be an early dismissal tomorrow (12:45) and on Tuesday, December 23rd. School will not resume until Monday, January 5th.
  • MHRD 8th Grade Parent Nights
  • January 6th - Morris Hills
  • January 8th - Morris Knolls
  • School Closed - Monday, January 19th, for a staff in-service day.

Thank you all for partnering with our school and staff to benefit each child! The TJ faculty and staff would like to wish the Rockaway Borough Community a happy holiday season and a wonderful new year!

From Mrs. Love and Mr. Bova...

December

Bravo on the Winter Concerts!

Students- Congrats on two days of fabulous performances!!!

Thank you for all your efforts prepping and rehearsing.

Here is the Band schedule for reference as we continue progressing on your instruments. Please continue to keep track of time spent practicing.

Here's to a happy, healthy holiday season!

A note from Mrs. Love

As I retire, I wanted to share that I have thoroughly enjoyed working with you all- Rockaway Borough students, families, and community. I will miss this place that has been a second home to me and the people who feel like family.

Students, you all are the heart and soul of the TJ music program and I know it will continue to thrive because of you. Please always look for ways to express your creativity through music. As long as you take advantage of every opportunity to learn and grow, this community will support you. I am so grateful for the honor and privilege to have been able to make music with you and be a part of your lives.

Families, I hope you will keep in touch. Please feel free to reach out anytime.

Thank you for your efforts, and for letting me share my passion for music with you. Thank you for entrusting me with your musical enrichment, and I am comforted knowing you will be in the best of hands moving forward with all of my capable, loving, and talented colleagues.

Wishing you all the very best,

Mrs. Love ~ h.lovetd2@gmail.com

*With this year being a period of transition for the TJ Instrumental Music department, please note the following will be effect until Mr. Bova fully moves into the position of Band Director:

  1. Band rehearsals in the morning will continue (for all groups, Beginner/Junior/Concert/Jazz Band) - these group rehearsals will cover music to play in future concerts, but will also act as large group lessons for band fundamentals.
  2. In school lessons will be postponed for most band students, unless Mr. Bova’s schedule permits meeting with them. Otherwise - in school lessons will be replaced with at home practice assignments using MakeMusic. These assignments will then be reviewed during large group rehearsals.
  3. The lesson schedule will resume as normal after a new Vocal/General Music teacher is in district.
  4. A “How to Practice” seminar for parents will be held at some date(s) in January to give more information about this process and help in guiding students' learning/assignment completion at home.
  5. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we keep up with student progress on their instruments, while in a time of transition.

The previous band schedule will be maintained with up to date information over the break. Here is the link to the Band schedule for reference. Please continue to keep track of time spent practicing, and thank you for your continued support!

Here's to a happy, healthy holiday season!

From the Theater Department-

The Wizard of Oz is now cast and we are on our way down the yellow brick road to rehearsals starting in January! I'd like to thank Mrs. Love for her many years of dedication to the TJ Players and the endless list of musicals she has been a part of here at TJ. Her help with the auditions this year was much appreciated and her presence will be greatly missed, but we wish her well on her retirement!

If your child is part of our cast or crew, please note that contracts were due on Monday, December 22nd. If he/she hasn't handed theirs in, please be sure to have them do so ASAP.

For CAST, rehearsals are on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays and begin on January 6th.

For CREW, rehearsals are on Saturdays through January, and then Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday from February through closing.

There will be a Parent Meeting for all parents of cast & crew on Tuesday, January 6th (right after rehearsal) at 5:00 p.m. We would like to have as many parents here as possible, so please try to make arrangements to attend.

We are looking forward to a fun and magical season of theater!

Mrs. Barbosa & Mr. Bova
