Thomas Jefferson School

May 2026

To Our Thomas Jefferson School Families,

May has brought a flurry of activities for all our students here at Thomas Jefferson School. Students have completed state NJSLA testing, will be holding a TREPS marketplace this week, gone on several field trips, and excelled in sports! As the 2025-2026 school year nears a close, it is worth noting that the students of Thomas Jefferson have grown and flourished into more prepared, mature, and capable young people. The students have carried themselves with honor and distinction. I could not have asked for a better group of students, staff, or a more involved and supportive community. Thank you to all parties for making this year in Rockaway Borough a wonderful experience!

The 8th grade class had a fantastic field trip to New York City. Students ate lunch on a Circle Line Cruise that sailed around much of Manhattan, offering wonderful views. The next stop was the Broadway play, The Outsiders, where students had a blast! On June 2nd, the 8th grade will go to the Pocono Valley Resort for a day of team building and outdoor fun!

On May 19th and 21st, we enjoyed the talents of our wonderful student musicians with two great performances! As always, Mr. Bova and Mr. Strapp were able to teach and coordinate tremendous performances by our students and our numerous bands and choirs. The students did a fantastic job, and both concerts were well attended!

Also on May 21st, our special area teachers hosted The Night of the Arts. This was again this year a huge success! Pieces of artwork from students across the district were displayed, and live music was performed by our students as well as Mr. Bova. The night was well attended as our community again showed amazing support for our students and our programs. Great job to Mrs. Isenberg, Mr. Strapp, Mr. Bova, and Ms. Selikoff.

We are thrilled to host another successful TREP$ Marketplace Vendor Event, where each child will set up a display and sell their handmade products to students, families, and the community. Over the last few months, students got hands-on experience with entrepreneurship and leadership in their Social Studies class. Key life skills the program focuses on include product development, marketing, sales, customer service, and money handling. Students collaborated on teams, made presentations, thought creatively, acted professionally, supported one another, took risks, and worked hard, all while having fun. We are very proud of our young entrepreneurs and appreciate the support from our administrative team, parents, and the community. Great job to Mrs. Hynson for putting it all together!

Spring sports were again a bright spot for Thomas Jefferson School Athletes. The spring run club was a positive experience for all involved and kept our students moving! Softball had a fun and successful season with many new athletes on the team. Baseball had another incredible season, playing in the Morris County Championship against Morris Plains! All athletes who played on any team throughout the school year were able to attend a Somerset Patriots baseball game on May 27th, which was a wonderful experience! Great job to all our athletes and coaches this school year!

Musical Notes...

We are proud of the efforts of our music students in the Spring Concerts, as well as those who performed at Night of the Arts. Bravo!

The Band program is finishing out the year with even more music making. The TJ Concert Band and Select Chorus attend the annual High Note Festival on May 28th, and perform for the 8th grade graduation ceremony on June 17th.

7th & 8th graders are encouraged to consider the High School Marching Band!

As the school year ends, students using a school-owned instrument on loan must return the instrument to school as yearly maintenance and cleaning will take place during the summer.  If anyone needs an instrument over the summer, I would be happy to provide you with a store rental form, or contact me for help in obtaining one.

TJ Bands are generally made up as follows: Beginner Band-Grade 4, Junior Band-Grades 5&6, Concert Band-Grades 7&8.  In thinking about next year, please keep in mind that students can also be placed by ability level and instrument need.  So, advancement may be based on a placement audition in the fall.  Also, seating auditions in the fall will be determined by playing level too.  Best to keep practicing over the summer, so please encourage your child to do just that!

7th & 8th Graders Take Note

You are eligible and invited to join the Morris Hills High School Marching Band for their next season.

Please see below info and share it with anyone you think might be interested! (This includes students who have never played an instrument before or those interested in Color Guard with no prior experience.)

Hey Everyone,

I hope this message finds you well!

If you are interested and/or planning on joining the 2025 MH Marching Scarlet Knights Marching Band, here’s some information for you:

THE SHOW:

The marching band staff and I are working on our 2025 show selection, and will make an official announcement as soon as we've confirmed everything! Our membership (as in who plays certain instruments or signs up for the color guard) dictates what type of show that we program, so please sign up to partake in a positively life-changing experience!

THE SCHEDULE:

While I'm waiting on information from the school and our competition organization to will help finalize the schedule, here's what I can share:

  • Summer Practices - one evening a week starting in July (color guard members may have some additional practices as scheduled by Mrs. Moreno, our color guard director)
  • Band Camp - August 4th through 8th at Morris Hills
  • Two evening practices a week (we have to practice in the evening due to facility limitations) starting at the end of August, wrapping up at the end of October/first week of November. These practices are typically on Tuesdays and Thursdays, although adjustments may need to be made based on the master school calendar.
  • Occasional Friday evening football games
  • Saturday competitions and football games in September and October (possibly the first weekend in November)
  • Possibly ONE Sunday competition (for a championships performance)

*For note: high school sports teams typically operate, between practices and games/matches/meets, over 6 or 7 days a week throughout the fall. (I know this firsthand, as my oldest son was an athlete at MH!) The marching band meets 3 or 4 times a week!

HOW TO JOIN:

Here is the link to sign-up, and feel free to share this link with anyone you think would be interested: 2025-2026 MHMB Sign-Up Form

There is no experience necessary, and we can use members in all sections! Anyone in 8th through 12th grades is able to join, keeping in mind that any 8th grader interested must live in Wharton, Rockaway Township and/or Borough, or Denville.

BEHIND THE SCENES:

Here is a link to a GREAT video put together by one of our outstanding band parents, showing past season highlights and “behind the scenes”: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g84r78sgfeeaz45/Final.mov?dl=0

Lastly, I’d like to share with potential new members (and their parents/guardians) a great article: 10 Lessons Your Child Will Learn in Marching Band. It’s a quick and informative read!

As we're coming off one of our most successful seasons in about a decade, as well as our largest group in at least 15 years, it goes without saying that this is an INCREDIBLY EXCITING time to be part of one of the most successful and storied programs in the state!!!!!!

Please reach out with any questions you may have!

Take care,

Mr. H.
