Dear Friends,
April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, a time to recognize the challenges many children face and reaffirm our commitment to protecting their well-being. At Radiant Futures, we work every day to provide safety, support, and advocacy for survivors, ensuring that families have the resources they need to break free from abuse and build a future filled with hope.
As part of our advocacy efforts, we are proud to be a member of the Blue-Ribbon Committee in partnership with the Raise Foundation, working alongside other community leaders to prevent child abuse and strengthen support networks for vulnerable families.
In addition to our ongoing programs, we invite you to join us for an evening of impact and celebration at our Mardi Gras Ball on April 26th at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. This spectacular event will feature live entertainment, fine dining, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of survivors. Every dollar raised will directly support our programs, helping us provide safe shelter, counseling, and essential services to those in need.
Your support makes this work possible, and together, we can build a community where every child and survivor has the opportunity to thrive. We look forward to seeing you at the Mardi Gras Ball and continuing this vital mission together.
With appreciation,
Mark

| | Carolina’s Story: Breaking Free from a Lifetime of Silence | | |
When Carolina walked into her first Personal Empowerment Program (PEP) class, she sat alone, her face emotionless, her guard up. It was PEP 4: The Effects of Domestic Violence on Children. As the class discussed how childhood trauma shapes adult relationships, she remained quiet—until the video on brain development played. Something inside her cracked. Tears streamed down her face.
For the first time, she saw the connection between her past and the abusive relationship she was trapped in.
A Childhood Stolen
At just eight years old, Carolina was abused by a family member. Terrified and confused, she did what every child is told to do—she told her mother. But instead of love and protection, she was met with blame and shame. The betrayal was worse than the abuse itself, she later said. Embarrassed and devastated, she blocked the memory, convincing herself it had never happened. But as she entered adulthood, Carolina found herself in two abusive relationships, each filled with control and fear. Physical touch triggered terrifying out-of-body experiences, a reaction she couldn’t understand until that PEP class. It was then that she realized her repressed childhood trauma was affecting her adult relationships.
| | Breaking the Cycle: Advocating for Child Abuse Prevention | | |
Child abuse is a serious issue affecting millions of children across the country. According to the Children’s Bureau, an estimated 600,000 children in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect each year. The impact of this trauma can last a lifetime, leading to emotional, mental, and physical health struggles that persist into adulthood. Many survivors face challenges such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and difficulty forming healthy relationships. Without support, some may turn to substance abuse or unknowingly repeat cycles of violence.
Abuse often continues across generations. Children who grow up experiencing violence may be at higher risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of abuse in adulthood. Without intervention, this cycle can continue, affecting families for generations and contributing to broader societal issues, including increased crime rates and social instability.
At Radiant Futures, we believe that preventing child abuse is essential to breaking the cycles of domestic violence and human trafficking. That’s why we are proud members of the Blue-Ribbon Committee, in partnership with the Raise Foundation. Through this collaboration, we help organize annual awareness events for Child Abuse Prevention Month, providing community members with opportunities to learn, take action, and support prevention efforts.

Denim Day began as a response to a 1992 court ruling in Italy, where an 18-year-old woman’s rape conviction was overturned. The court argued that because her jeans were tight, she must have helped remove them, implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in protest, bringing international attention to the case and the broader issue of victim-blaming.
In 1999, the U.S.-based nonprofit Peace Over Violence launched Denim Day in Los Angeles to challenge harmful myths surrounding sexual violence and raise awareness about victim-blaming.
Radiant Futures stands in solidarity with this international movement and invites our supporters to join us on Denim Day—Wednesday, April 30, 2025—by wearing denim, speaking out against sexual violence, and challenging the misconceptions that perpetuate harm. Show your support by taking a selfie, sharing it on social media with #DenimDay, and tagging @radiant_futures.
