WBL Experience Leads to Full-Time Careers
|
|
Two members of the Class of 2021 are great examples of how to turn valuable work experience in high school into a career upon graduation.
Alexander Macias from New Manchester High School and Jamez McPherson from Lithia Springs High School are two upcoming graduates who participated in work-based learning (WBL) in high school and will begin promising career paths upon graduation in May.
Jamez McPherson was recently named Georgia Northwest Region Work-Based Learning Student of the Year. The region is the largest in the state and includes Douglas, Fulton, Clayton, Cobb, Bartow, Carroll and Floyd Counties.
Jamez has worked as a WBL intern with the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority (WSA) in the human resources department since August 2020. He looks forward to beginning a full-time career with the WSA.
Jamez is pictured with Ms. Trina Smith, his supervisor with the WSA.
NMHS senior Alexander Macias participated in C.W. Matthews' career signing day recently. The event celebrated eight seniors who worked as interns and will begin a full-time career with the well-established transportation construction company. The signing was held on one of C.W. Matthews' current projects -- a new bridge that is under construction over Lake Allatoona.
New Manchester's WBL Coordinator Whitney Lester attended the ceremony. “For too long only students who sign college athletic and academic scholarships are celebrated at graduation," said Lester. "It’s time we celebrate students who are making the grown- up adult decision to start their career right after high school!”
Alexander is featured in a video of the recent career signing event.

Holly Springs Team Wins Top Honors in
Stock Market Game
|
|
Holly Springs Elementary students, under the direction of Mrs. Katherine Russ, won top honors in the Stock Market Game sponsored by the Georgia Council on Economic Education.
The winning team from Holly Springs Elementary was the highest performing elementary school in all of Congressional District 13, turning their $100,000 into $122,933.89 in only 10 weeks. The students received a special t-shirt, certificate of achievement, pennant and public recognition.
The Stock Market Game is a nationally organized simulation where students in grades 4-12 are given a fictional $100,000 to invest for 10 weeks. The simulation is a penny for penny simulation of the NYSE, NASDAQ, and AMEX exchanges. If it happens in real life - it happens in the game. The Georgia Council on Economic Education has endorsed and promoted the Georgia version of the game since 1981. GCEE conducts training for the game for teachers and handles registrations and awards recognitions. Prizes are given at the school district (regional) level and the congressional district level.
