Dear Friends of Indigena,
I have always been interested in the passing down of artistic talent from one generation to the next. This newsletter presents the works of three generations of the Ishulutaq family of Pangnirtung (now pronounced like the original Inuit name, Panniqtuuq). It was in the late 70s that I visited Pangnirtung and was introduced to the works of Jaco Ishulutaq, now a Master Carver, and shortly after gave Jaco a one-person exhibition in my first gallery, Inukshuk Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario.
Today we see that the artistic talent has been passed on to Jaco's son, Jupa, who has had his father mentoring him in honing his carving skills. At the very beginning, the family boasts of the talent of mother/grandmother, Elisapee, the well-known graphic artist whose prints are represented in many museum collections.
