President's Report

By Lorraine Zamora

Happy New Year! Or so I deeply hope.

Three Parks has a busy year coming up in 2024. In January alone, we have an evening of Get Out the Vote postcard writing on Tuesday, January 9; a club meeting featuring candidates for Assemblymember on Wednesday, January 10; a New Year’s Party on Sunday afternoon, January 21; and canvassing on Long Island to help ensure that a Democrat wins George Santos’s seat in CD3.

Look for details on these activities elsewhere in this newsletter.

The rest of the year promises to be as busy as January, and Three Parks is here to meet the challenge.

I hope to see you at all our January activities and look forward to working with you to ensure that 2024 is a happy year for all of us.

Thank you for all you’ve done to make Three Parks one of the city’s most successful Democratic clubs. As someone recently said to me, “Three Parks is more than a club; it’s a family!"

Long Island Special Election on Feb. 13

Join Us for Postcard Writing and Canvassing Trips. Help Democrats Gain a Seat in Congress!

George Santos has been expelled from Congress, and now it's time to replace him with a Democrat! A special election has been called for February 13 in Long Island's CD 3 (northern Nassau County and a small slice of Queens), and Three Parks will be reaching out to voters in that district to help gain a crucial win for Democrats.

  • Write Postcards with Three Parks Friends: On Tuesday, January 9, we will meet for an evening of postcard writing at 1 Morningside Drive (110 St.), Community Room. 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Postcards, stamps and scripts will be provided. Masks are recommended. Donations for postage are encouraged.

Please RSVP Here

  • Pick Up Postcards Packets on Broadway on Mondays and Thursdays, January 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, and 29 at a sidewalk table on 104th St. & Broadway, NW corner, 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Donations for postage are encouraged.

Please RSVP Here

  • Canvassing Trips: We will make weekend canvassing trips to CD3 on Long Island on Sunday, January 28th and Sunday, February 4th. Other dates may be added. We will leave the Upper West Side at approximately 9:30 AM. Details to follow. We'll travel by LIRR to easily accessible areas to knock on doors to get out the Democratic vote. Watch your e-mail for details.

Let's do our part to win back

Congress in 2024!

Vote for New TPID Membership Director

The Club's current Membership Director, Theresa Canter, has now become one of our District Leaders, so Board member Josh Pepper is running to take her place. The vote will take place at the Feb. 14 Club meeting.

Josh is an attorney in private practice representing plaintiffs in civil-rights cases. Before moving to private practice, he spent many years in law practice for the state, including stints as an Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Commissioner and General Counsel to the NYS Office of Mental Health. Josh is a longtime Club member and was president in 2007.

Democratic Strategists Tell How We Can Win

US Congress Seats in New York in 2024

Our December 13 Club Meeting focused on New York State Democrats' plans and campaign strategies for winning back Congressional seats in our state in 2024. Our featured speakers (above, left to right) were Ny Whitaker, co-founder of New York for Biden/Harris; Lizzy Weiss, Coordinated Director, NY State Democratic Party; and Alyssa Cass, Democratic campaign consultant.

You Could Have It So Much Better

The True Cost of Income Inequality

By Daniel Tsadok

A recent study published by the RAND Corporation with the unassuming title of "Trends in Income From 1975 to 2018," by Carter C. Price and Kathryn A. Edwards, takes an interesting approach to income inequality. In the three decades following World War II, income growth was relatively equal across the board, from the poorest to the richest, and generally in line with the growth of GDP, but since about 1975, income growth has been increasingly concentrated towards the top. The paper poses the question: What if income growth had remained as equitable as it was before 1975?

The study finds that in this scenario, the median income for "full-year, full-time, prime-aged workers in 2018 dollars" would have risen from $42,000 in 1975 to $92,000 in 2018, instead of to what it actually was, $50,000. The bottom 25%, who were earning an average of $28,000 in 1975, would have been earning $61,000 in 2018. Instead, they actually earned $33,000. Even the top 5% would have been earning more: $198,000 instead of $191,000. The "top 1% mean" would have been making $630,000 instead of $1,384,000, from $289,000 in 1975. But even in that case, their income still would have more than doubled since 1975.

The study also breaks down income by demographics. ...
