November 5, 2025

As this is my first “Three Things” since the inauguration, I want to take this opportunity to thank the University community for their efforts in planning and executing a marvelous event. Sue and I were overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and welcome that we received that day. We’re VERY proud to be officially Redhawks.

As we head into November, here are three things I’d like you to know:

1) Legislative Engagement – I’ve been traveling around the state meeting with members of the Missouri House and Senate to discuss SEMO’s legislative priorities. The consensus from those elected officials is that 2026 will be difficult funding year for the General Assembly. This will, however, not deter the University from talking about the importance of state investment. To help send that message, we’ve launched SEMO NOW!, a legislative advocacy network for alumni, friends, and employees. This non-partisan, grassroots initiative will empower people who care about SEMO to share their passion with elected officials. To join SEMO NOW!, complete the registration form. I encourage each of you to consider becoming a part of this advocacy network to add new voices to our governmental relations efforts.

2) Budget Review Committee – The first meeting of the University’s expanded Budget Review Committee occurred late last month. This group will be an important part of the development of the FY 2027 University operating budget. Through their work, they will make recommendations on compensation, tuition, room and board, facilities and equipment priorities, and a preliminary estimate of credit hour mix that will inform the projected revenue picture. I’m grateful to the faculty, staff, and students who have agreed to serve. To see a roster of Budget Review Committee members, visit the BRC page in mySEMO. Each of them represents an important group of stakeholders on campus. You as employees should feel connected to this work and convey ideas on operational efficiencies and revenue opportunities to any member of the BRC. The work of the Budget Review Committee culminates with the Board of Governors approving the FY27 budget in June 2026.

3) Employee Appreciation LunchTo foster a stronger sense of community amongst faculty and staff, I have asked that we reinstate the University’s traditional Thanksgiving employee appreciation lunch. To ensure as many employees as possible can attend, we’ve moved this event from its traditional date just prior to Thanksgiving to a week earlier. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. We’ll have a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by our good friends at SEMO Dining. Please RSVP by November 12. We’ll look forward to seeing all of you at this new campus tradition.

Thanks for everything you do for our students and community. The fall season is one of the most beautiful and exciting times on a university campus. Take a walk across our beautiful campus and enjoy November in Southeast Missouri.

GO REDHAWKS!
