What we're reading:
A large wall display on sustainability and peace is featured in the San Jose, Costa Rica airport. Amazingly enough, one of the panels is a blog post written by Chapman University as part of their 2017 study abroad program on Peace Communication! Not to be bested, the recent 2018 cohort has written another insightful set of blogs that both explain and reflect on what a study abroad experience through UPEACE means.

What we're watching:
January in Costa Rica means summer, sunshine, and lots of international visitors. After a jam-packed month hosting study abroad students, we have Costa Rica on the brain! Whether you're an expert on our country or simply interested in learning more, this 'Geography Now' video is sure to leave you laughing out loud, and just might teach you a few things as well!

Quote we're inspired by:

"I am not the same having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.

We kicked off the year with a busy January here at UPEACE, hosting a grand total of five different study abroad programs ranging from 3 weeks to 1 day, with students from middle school to Masters programs. Periods like this let us reflect on the real reason we promote global education, international exchange programs and learning by, across and through cultures. With these groups, we get back into the field, visiting the amazing partner programs that we are lucky enough to work with in Costa Rica, receiving scholarly lectures and interesting workshops, volunteering, painting and gardening with charitable organizations, practicing sustainable fishing, and visiting the most amazing sustainable farms. Relationships are grown and reaffirmed, and alongside the students we reconnect with our natural environment.
But more importantly, we get to see the fire in students' eyes as they experience all of these things for the first time. We watch as new passions and interests ignite, and exposure to Central America suddenly opens new windows to reflect on California, Mexico, Florida, or wherever else the participants call home. Because, really, the importance of international travel is two-fold: you gain new knowledge and experience, but at the same time, everything you've ever known before changes right before your eyes as your perception shifts. Home is never the same again.
We hope you're starting 2018 with dreams of broadening horizons and new learning. If you need to shine a new light on your own life and start planning a new direction, it isn't too late to join our online course  Designing Your Life: Innovating from the Inside Out, which is just kicking off today!
