April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

It is important to eliminate risky behaviors on the road

National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration's U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign reminds drivers of the deadly dangers and the legal consequences – including fines – of texting behind the wheel.

Forty-eight states, including Vermont, have passed laws making it illegal to text while driving. In April, you may notice an increase in police enforcing texting laws and reminding drivers of the dangers. Consider these tips:

If you must send or receive a text: pull over to a safe location and park your vehicle first.
If you must make a phone call: only do so with a hands-free device and be sure to pay attention to the road.
If you can’t resist the temptation to look at your phone: keep it in your dash, personal vehicle, backseat, or anywhere out of sight, and put it on silent/do not disturb.

Good Catch, Near Miss of the Month

Three winners celebrated in March!

One of our trucks carrying organic material was leaving the transfer station when Rodney Watkins noticed the lift arms were still up above the truck and in danger of taking down power wires. Rodney got the driver's attention, enabling him to come to a stop on Houghton road before reaching the overhead wires. The driver was able to put the lift arms down and safely proceed with his day.

Marc Rozell was approaching a truck to load, and as he got closer, he could smell gear oil. He began investigating the source, and found a leaking wheel seal on the trailer. It was also discovered that the wheel bearing nut was loose, causing the entire wheel to come loose. The unit was called in, and road service was dispatched to repair it.

After a co-worker shared some personal health information with him, Marty McMahon showed that he actively cares for his fellow employees (AC4P!) by suggesting that the employee seek further medical attention.

Rodney, Marc and Marty, thank you for your hard work and for helping to keep your co-workers safe and healthy!

COVID-19 Vaccine Standby List

Did you get your vaccination yet?

Governor Scott outlined his phased reopening plan this week, and getting vaccinated is key to making the plan a reality!

The State of Vermont has deemed those 40+ now eligible to sign up for the vaccine.

Vermonters 30+ can sign up beginning April 12, 2021. Vermonters 16+ can sign up beginning April 19, 2021.

Don't forget, you can sign up to get on the standby list to receive your COVID-19 vaccine. A number of our employees have been able to get vaccinated before they were qualified using this method!
