This week we're presenting Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut, Addison Gallery of American Art and Cahoon Museum of American Art.
These three American artists, each being presented in a solo show in New England this month, hail from different eras though each created work seen as creative and experimental during their time -- from early American Impressionism to work that is "uncategorizable."
The March/April 19th Anniversary edition of Artscope Magazine is now available. Want more Artscope? Visit artscopemagazine.com and sign up for online access to see all of our articles, reviews, spotlights and profiles any time, anywhere.

Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut presents Banks Violette: American Standard, a show that holds a lens to American identity through art that "mixes influences from postwar art, politics, religion, and pop culture, creating dark, ambiguous pieces that blur the line between widely accepted ideas and those that are feared or rejected," according to a curatorial statement. This exhibition contains three of Violette's works including a steel, aluminum and electric light sculpture of the American flag, a decayed gas station reconstructed inside the museum, and finally a "ghostly" video projection that serves as "a haunting reminder" of the "myriad unfulfilled promises" of Reagan-era economic policies. The museum is open Thursday from 12 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday and Sunday from 12 to 5 p.m. Museum of Contemporary Art Connecticut is located at 19 Newtown Turnpike
Westport, CT. For more information, please visit here.

Addison Gallery of American Art presents June Leaf: Shooting from the Heart, which shines a spotlight on the 75-year career of artist June Leaf whose "enigmatic, beguiling, and often irreverent work" is "uncategorizable," according to a curatorial statement. In this exhibition, Leaf's work is arranged thematically with her stationary and kinetic sculptures, paintings, and two dimensional works in conversations across media "revealing the artist’s sustained engagement with such motifs and themes as theater and performance, the human drama, dance, gender, motion, urban life, mythology, and interpersonal relationships." The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m. Addison Gallery of American Art is located at Phillips Academy, 3 Chapel Avenue, Andover, MA. Cahoon Museum of American Art presents John Enneking: American Impressionist, which puts on display six Enneking paintings in the Cahoon Museum's collection along with works on loan. John Enneking, who is often credited as "America’s first Impressionist," according to a curatorial statement, was seen as "one of the world’s greatest landscape painters" during his time. Enneking's work exemplifies New England scenes, "bubbling trout brooks, thickly forested landscapes, solitary clam diggers, and his favorite subject: the brilliant New England twilight." The museum opens for the season on Wednesday, March 19. It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cahoon Museum of American Art is located at 4676 Falmouth Road, Cotuit, MA.
