The Value of What We Do- From the Lens of a Parent
Empowering lives, one family tree at a time
I wanted to share an account of my journey as a former beneficiary of Valley Oak Children Services (VOCS) and my new current role as a Family Support Specialist in the Stage 1 Program here at VOCS.
In my capacity as a Family Support Specialist, I am privileged to assist and guide other young families as they navigate the challenging transition toward economic stability. It brings me immense joy to be part of an organization that played a pivotal role in transforming my life, and now I get to pay it forward by supporting others on their journey.
As a young, single mother here in Butte County without family support, I grappled with the daunting challenge of affording quality childcare that would enable me to pursue employment. At one point, I found myself having to leave my daughter with whoever was available, resulting in inconsistent and sub-par care.
|
The turning point in our life occurred when I discovered the invaluable services provided by Valley Oaks Children Services through a family friend. Despite being initially placed on a waiting list due to my living situation, my eligibility for subsidized childcare changed shortly after my first call. The prospect of my daughter attending a genuine preschool, offering a nurturing learning environment and the opportunity to build new friendships, filled me with excitement and gratitude.
After thorough research into various childcare options in Chico, I chose a preschool conveniently located near my workplace. The care she received was exceptional, featuring a classroom-like setting complete with miniature desks. The early education she received not only facilitated her reading and writing skills but also provided her with a significant advantage throughout her subsequent school years.
This personal journey exemplifies the transformative impact of Valley Oak Children Services on individuals and families within our community. As this help allowed me to focus on my career, knowing that she was being cared for, happy, and learning new things." I believe that sharing stories like mine out in our community will not only highlight the positive outcomes of our programs but also inspire others to seek the support they may need.

The testament of the value of our community programs is best conveyed by families. If your agency has a letter or shout out from a family please let us know.
